I was eyeing the 30" HP but am looking to expand my options. I know that I won't be getting as high of a resolution with a TV, but anything over 1920x1080/1200 doesn't seem to be necessary to me.

What companies actually use IPS technology in their TVs? I think I read Sony uses mostly PVA, but that's the extent of my knowledge on this matter.

LG uses S-IPS in a lot of their models, but be careful if you buy 37" and smaller, some of them are really crappy VA panels, not nearly as good as what you would get in a Samsung or Sony.

edit: you might wanna be careful with the 42" models too, I'm not sure about them. I remember reading 42"+ were all S-IPS somewhere though.

Many maker use a variety of panel manufacturers, sometimes even in the same model ( a panel lotto).

For a sure thing, I would go with Panasonic. They only use IPS, and they aren't made by LG. Which is likely a good thing, given LGs poor record on QA.

Thanks all.

I've got my sights locked on the TC-L32U22. A quick skim of comments notes that its response is pretty poor, but I don't really game on this PC so it should be okay

From what I've read at AVS Forum, it seems all current Panasonic TVs will subsample a 4:4:4 chroma signal on the HDMI inputs, so text and fine detail are unlikely to be satisfactory even if they'll do 1:1 pixel mapping without over/underscan (it also seems they won't go any higher than 1366x768 on the VGA input).

Unfortunately using a HDTV as a general-purpose PC monitor is fraught with potential gotchas, many of which aren't immediately obvious. You may get lucky and find one that works well, but if you can afford the 30" HP without selling a kidney I think it would be a much better proposition.

Yeah, I was browsing the customer reviews on a retailer's site, and one user noted that the edge enhancement is undefeatable through HDMI. Thus, some of the text may be more difficult to read.

Why is there a problem with EVERYTHING.

I wouldn't really debate the 30" HP over a 1080P television, get the HP.

But if you'e had a complete change of heart, and want perfect text then check out the LG 32LD450. Buy it in-store to assure yourself of getting an IPS panel (panel lottery). The way to tell if it's IPS is through the Sku number on the box.

This thread was originally about the LD400 series, but the discussion quickly switched over to the LD450 model ---> http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1573495

More info about Sku numbers is posted in that thread i linked btw.

The LG LD450 series is the current favorite TV to use as a PC monitor, probably because it does proper 4:4:4 and has low input lag etc etc.
