Here's Anandtech's reviews of the color accuracy of the Dell U2412m and the Galaxy Note 3 Movie mode. This is of interest because that site is using the same Gretag Macbeth patch test to get average Delta E readings for both screens; if you go to other sites, they will have different Delta E color accuracy results because they do different tests.

The Dell u2412m scored 7.41 average Delta E when uncalibrated, and 1.71 when calibrated. The Galaxy Note 3 in Movie Mode scored 4.62. The lower the Delta E is, the better. A value of 3 is considered good because most humans won't notice color differences below that, and 5 is the upper acceptable limit.

The Galaxy Note 3 in Movie Mode pushes pretty close to the limit, but does pretty well for a phone by being under the limit at all. An uncalibrated U2412m goes way beyond the limit; but a properly calibrated U2412m is far, far better than the Galaxy Note 3. Note that this implies that pictures will probably look different either way on your U2412m compared to the Note 3, whether the U2412m is calibrated ( much more accurate) or uncalibrated (much less accurate).

We have no way of knowing how well or how badly your u2412m is calibrated since you report that you are using some ICC profile you downloaded from somewhere.

Most monitors that you buy will probably have worse color accuracy out of the box than your Galaxy Note 3 in Movie Mode until you calibrate them.

Pretty obvious they are tested with two different methodologies....

By they way, they were pretty clueless back then, now that they just bomb calman on monitors, enough BS.

In the Galaxy Note 3 review, they state "in the all important Gretag Macbeth patch test, Delta-E is pretty low" and give the average Delta E of 4.62.

What did I miss that is so obvious to you?

Because of the large change, we will be making a break from everything in the past and going with DeltaE 2000 for our measurements. Because of this the numbers from this review and going forward are not comparable with older reviews as different DeltaE formulas cannot be compared. I will write a longer article on this new measurement system soon, but this will be our first use of it for a desktop display. (Anand has been using portions of these tests for tablets for a while now.)

Their current test suite was first used on the iPhone 5 in September 2012, but it wasn't used on desktop displays until February 2013, a year after the U2412 review.

I'm telling you what you're saying if wrong, but clearly you do not know what accurate colors are and cannot interpret the information in the review. Either way, there's a list of recommendations; do what you will.

Anyway, I used the Standard ICC profile which was done by TFTCentral itself.

I know what accurate colours are, it's not rocket science. However the same can't be said for you at all.

Well if you aren't using it for professional graphic editing then IPS is second worst screen technology after TN for general usage ;)

Especially cheap 6bit IPSes like that Dell

The answer to both of your questions is yes, but other than having been wrong about Anandtech's testing methodology (I'm not afraid to admit when I got something wrong), I'm not sure what I've done to deserve your sarcasm, so I guess I'm done here.
 
Had several IPS-Dipslays (gave this tech a few chances) , but could never get used to it.
Shitty blacks and IPS-Glow were the main reasons I went back to VA / A-MVA.
Imho for general usage (games/movies/coding/browsing) IPS is even worse than a decent TN, especially if you use it a lot at night or in a dark room.
Guess I'll stick to AVs until there are good and affordable OLEDs.
 
The NEC 2490wuxi (you have linked Snowdog's 2009 picture of one with tape on it) had an official uncalibrated contrast ratio of 800:1, when calibrated it had contrast ratio as low as 200:1, you are looking at A-TW polarizer film not anti-glare coating, and it was considered one of the most color-accurate monitors of its time, so you managed to lie three times in one sentence. ;)

Hey now, that 200 contrast was clearly something screwy in Lacie software. Mine is close to 700:1 calibrated, which in normal room lighting is nearly indistinguishable from something higher.

I bought my NEC 2490 in 2008 and I am still using it today as my only home screen, because I have yet to find anything that can match its overall capability. I will be sad when it breaks/wears out.

I have used all the main types a lot, both at work and at home. The critical drawbacks of each tech are as follows.

VA: Issues:
Response Time: Slowest updating of the technologies, more smearing/ghosting, often most input lag as well.
Contrast shift anomalies: This is the main reason I got rid of my first VA screen in the first week. Some people aren't bothered by them, but they really drove me nuts.

TN Issues:
Horrendous viewing angles: It makes solid colors look like gradients even when staring straight at the screen. Image changes up/down, side/side.
Oddly they also seem to have white glow like IPS that almost no one talks about. I have two at work and I want to burn them. Worse of the worse.

IPS issues:
White glow: This really is the main issue with IPS. At an angle dark screen areas exhibit a white glow. It is really too bad, because aside from this it is nearly the perfect LCD. Otherwise it has the most viewing angle stablity, and reasonable response times as well. This is the reason Everyone now has their own version of IPS (ex: Samsung PLS).

The weird thing is that there is a cure for IPS white glow. I know because I have it on my screen. The A-TW polarizer eliminates the glow, making IPS nearly perfect. Yet I don't think you can buy a new monitor (without crazy price) with this technology. So when my Legendary 2490 dies, I will be very sad indeed.

Funny when the saying: "They don't build them like they used to" applies to modern tech that is supposed to be improving.

VA have terrible gamma-shift. Had several VA displays because they had supposedly better contrast ratio and despite superb results with calibration probe I had constant issues with black level, dark details and contrast ratio seemed bad. After switching to IPS all issues with dark details are gone and black is as black as it can possibly get so there is no this "if I moved a head by inch this part of image would have better contrast" nagging issue.

VA displaying black or dark grey look like blackish blob that gets brighter and brighter. Black on sides gets brighter than dark grey in the middle:

And each eye gets different blob on different location on screen which make it even worse than on this photo.

IPS on the other hand display such pictures perfectly, especially A-TW IPS.

I have LG and it is very good, best monitor I ever had or saw. They are rarely available but there is plenty of LP2480zx for good price, even cheaper than 2490WUXi

I also bought today 2090UXi so I will compare it to LG when it arrive. Not really 2490WUXi but close enough :)

As I said no new monitors for non crazy price. AFAIK these are old, very expensive monitors in their day. Now discontinued, so that you have to buy from sketchy sources today (likely used or refurbs).

I only buy monitors that I can get within my own country, so I have some chance of straightening things out, if they go wrong.

I have been testing this thing for quite a long while, and no, I didn't see random sceneries on internet to check colour reproduction of the monitor. I borrowed my colleague's 5D Mark (or something like that) to take pictures of flowers in my garden, especially colours like green, red and blue, as they matter most. Then I reviewed those photos on my monitor and on my phone (on my t.v. too, but that's not really what I want to say here), along with the actual product, the flowers in this case, I have lost count how many times I've compared them, well, I've been doing that with different other items too, finally I bothered to ask today, the monitor is doing worst if compared with that other two items, being the most over saturated unit! Yes, if I change the tv's profile to Standard and phone's display mode to Adapt then the monitor will be the best performer, but that's irrelevant.

This is no way to test color accuracy. The color of the actual flowers is determined by the spectral reflectance of the flowers. The color that the camera encodes the flower is determined by the spectral transmission of the camera's RGB filters, in combination with the color processing that the camera itself performs on the raw image data.

So unless the camera is a true colorimeter (device independent, that satisfies the luther-ives conditions), then you can't use your camera as a color measuring tool.

I would add that the calibration has to be performed every few months, even if the monitor comes out of the box with perfect colors it will change over time.
So yeah, applying a profile from a physically different device at some random stage of its life is no good. I don't get how someone who says being "obsessed with colors" can just disregard this.

At least a decent enough calibration should be done in factory. The factory calibration of U2412 for being a IPS panel is nothing but ridiculous.

I don't know that much, all I know that I took a shot of a blood red flower, and I wanted to see the same (or near enough) colour on my monitor, but I saw a flower with orange tint, which was not the case on my phone (it was at least red, nowhere near orange and at least comparable with the actual flower), and shockingly even the TV showed better (not that orange) colour output than the monitor.

Now if you tell me that what I saw on the monitor is the actual colour of the flower, I can't agree with you there. What is the actual colour of the flower is the one I see with my naked eye. And that's why I did that comparison. I have near perfect vision, so my test could be non-technical but I don't think it it deserves that much discredit like being mentioned here.

I don't understand one thing, I asked a question here, why so many people are taking this personally? If I liked my mobile's display or television's display, I would have simply gone for a VA panelled one! I could have saved a little bit money too! After my job I merely get six hours to sleep, how much spare time do you guys think I really have? I don't think it's a dream expectation to expect an acceptable enough factory calibration, especially when the monitor is not particularly cheap! Darn!

The unfortunate truth is that you can either spend the time to learn and the money on correct tools, or you can deal with the limitations of factory calibration. Nobody is going to wave a magic wand and make things perfect for you, because it is not technically possible unless you purchase a professional monitor with an integrated calibration device (and enjoy spending professional quantities of dosh for the privileged).

If you person preference is for oversaturated but inaccurate colour, then you would be better served by purchasing a wide-gamut monitor and treating it as sRGB. All colour will then be highly saturated.
 
Why do you think almost all TV's have high contrast glossy VA panels?

Because you don't suffer from the weird contrast shifts when you are sitting 10 feet away on your couch.

Now why do you think nearly ever single phone/tablet LCD panel is IPS?

Even if one likes some oversaturation still stay the fuck away from wide gamut. It doesnt just oversaturate, but turns every color to neon. Its way worse than mild oversaturation in phone screens.

Wide gamut comes in many favor, and with high end eizo/nec, you can control exactly its gamut.

New video standard and new TV(OLED, quantum dot) are all pushing for wide gamut.

It's all depend on one's need.

All i'm saying is this:

even if the colors matched perfectly (between what you saw with your naked eye, and what the image you took with your camera looked like), that wouldn't mean that your display has accurate colors.

That said, if content on your display consistently looks "off" from what you think it should, then that is a sign of poor color accuracy. Flesh tones are a good test for this.
