Whats everyones take on the quality of the MP3 player provided by android?

Switching from a 2G iPhone to the Incredible when it comes out on the 29th and wondering whether I should buy a nano to use as my MP3 player or stick to one device for everything...

I can't speak for 2.1, but in 1.6 I have an issue that makes me end up using an mp3 player instead of my phone.

There's some system-wide equalizer settings that are completely invisible to the average user, and it's set to cut the bass out of anything played through the media player. It's not noticeable on normal earbuds or headphones, but I also use the aux input in my car for music while driving, and I imagine if you used nicer headphones you might notice it as well.

If I assign the exact same song to a ringtone and have someone call my phone, there's no bass reduction, and it sounds like I would expect it to. There's a program to do a louder volume hack and mess with the equalizer settings, but I haven't really had any luck keeping the volume/quality the same and only removing the bass reduction.

All the more reason for me to get a new phone then. My poor old MyTouch 3G just seems so sluggish with any of the 2.1 roms out.

Do you mean by ease of use or quality of the audio?
iPhones/iPods don't really have the best audio, in fact have some of the worst audio when it comes to MP3 players but I guess if you like iTunes then there really isn't a question.

Android in general has a decent MP3 player. It is drag and drop which some people like and others don't. It supports many file types and playlists. I don't have a ton of experience with it as I have a Zune that I use but I think it's decent for a cell phone but could use some work.

I am not the biggest fan of iTunes since its a big piece of shit.... it lags out, crashes occasionally... but lately its been pretty stable for me. All of my music is organized by genre and then by album, so I could live with "drag and drop" routine...
I also recently got into DJ podcasts, and iTunes makes subscribing to podcasts sooo EASY.
I guess I would switch to foobar if it supports podcast subscriptions..

Once you get an android phone, download Google Listen and you won't need a computer for podcast subscriptions.

You can do a search and find the Podcast you want to add:

Or you can just add it by "Add Subscriptions" if you have the URL which is easier IMO since there are a lot of Podcasts to search through if it's not super known.

You can't click on "Add Podcast" for a lot of sites because they just link you to iTunes since they aren't programmed for other Podcast programs.

oh cool!
thanks for the pic tutorial
looks like ill just buy a 16gig memory card for now and use the phone as MP3 player as well...

Call me crazy, but I don't use my Droid to listen to music (or watch videos).

I prefer using my Cowon S9 since it supports FLAC. Kinda used to using my Cowon since it has buttons on it's side to advanced / reverse songs w/o actually having to activate the screen to access basic controls.

No. Droid does not support FLAC.

Maybe if I rooted it and install a FLAC player for it, but there is no native FLAC support.

Would be nice if there was a video program with embedded support for DivX and Xvid 'cause I don't feel like re-encoding a lot of videos to mp4.

No, not native but there's an android app called 'andLess' that will play FLAC/APE.

Sorry for being confusing, didn't take time to post details last time.

^^^

Thanks, I'll check it out. But I think I would prefer using my Cowon S9 since basic control buttons are on the side and it has 32GB of storage. But 'andLess' should do the trick for short commutes though.

i hated itunes SO MUCH, that since i got my droid, i xferred all my songs to droid, reformatted and got rid of any apple itunes/quicktime crap.

did you know you can't uninstall quicktime w/o itunes failing? wth is that? and ppl sue microsoft for anti trust ie and windows.

The Droid is an amazing media player, and I don't have to use Itunes. I don't get why anyone wants to use that program. With the Droid I can play music, watch movies, and stream my favorites radio stations either through headphones or the built in speak and it sounds amazing.

Sony xperia x10 is a fanastic music player, built in music store aswell, sound quality is the best ive heard on any phone running iphone os/android/webos/rim and win mobile. Mediascape is pretty dam good on the x10, i wonder what they will add on the 2.1/2.1 upgrade (hoping for some kind of psn functionality as promised)

I'm deciding this now but so far the iPod is winning because my droid crackles at bass songs and higher volumes which can get very irritating.

I found this to be the case with my Droid only when I was using shitty headphones. Plugging up my studio monitor 'phones however sounds excellent.

I wouldn't call it an amazing media player since it only supports mp4 video files. Just like any other smartphone.

Do you really need a whole lot more than that for a mobile video device?
It supports "H.263" and "H.264 AVC" in 3GPP and MP4 formats.

Good enough for me :)

I know my Droid sounds great in my car when using Pandora (or even the standard media player) and connected via BT. Bass sounds awesome and I haven't had any issues with sound or video quality. I actually just tried watching movies on it a couple days ago and they look great. If you want some "test" vids/movies, check out this thread. It's got plenty to choose from :D.

It's a format I don't use.

My video library consists of AVI (DivX and XviD) and MKV files. AAC is not my preferred audio format for video, I prefer to copy AC3 directly. Granted, my Cowon S9 does not support MKV, but it also does not support mp4.

Anywaste, for the time being I prefer to use my 32GB Cowon S9 to listen to music and watch videos. At least I won't be draining my Droid's battery for that stuff.

I know there used to be a flac library on the Cydia store for iPhone but no applications implemented it, has that changed yet?
