Hey people...

I am planning to buy an iPod Video. I dont have a lot of leftover cash after my laptop. So i just want a good deal. when do you suggest should i buy it? Should i wait till the black friday sales? I need suggestions.... should i look at some other device... What i need is a good mp3 player with 20gb+ space and a color screen.... need not play video but photos are a must.... can any one suggest a player with maximum value for money?

If you do not want the video you should be able to find a photo leftover for a decent price. I just sold my photo to upgrade to the video. There are also some other brands of mp3 players you could look at but you will probably end up liking the iPods more.

I would always buy Creative products. I still like Creative stuff I just think you can't beat Apple for their design. I think the iPod interface is the best interface on any mp3 player.

Check amazon or your local store for some of the leftover iPod Photo's.
 
pretty much the only way to get a deal on any current ipod is the educational discount or ebay, other than that only retired ipods will be sold at below msrp. Prices have come down on the photo ipods and you could probably find one for a good deal, apple.com has refurb 30gb photo ipods for $249.
 
Any word on if the iPod video supports divx or has the ability to upgrade codecs?
 
i dont think that ipod video supports divx. it supports mp4 and quick time files.

It does not support divx. It does have the ability to upgrade codecs via a firmware rev. However, it's highly unlikely that apple would support divx.

do Creative players playback DivX? I think they do, at least Zen Vision can, do you know of any other players than can?
 
You can get a free video converter that will convert almost anything for ipod viewing

1.Conversion means further quality loss.
2.It takes time. I mean converting one hour video takes roughly 1 hour even with 3+Ghz CPU
3.You may have to pay to obtain codecs.

I'd go for a product that have a native support for latest codecs.
iPod video looks nice but its video capabilities are just marketing BS.
I think you actually have to pay for video converter for iPod, correct me if I am wrong
 
I was choosing between a video ipod or an iaudio x5. I suggest you check out the iAudio X5, which can be found on newegg for 250$ for the 20GB version, or $275 for the 20gb 35 hour battery life version (vs the 14 hour). This player plays Xvid, probably not the same as Divx... I'm prolly getting the iAudio over the Ipod Video. The only problem is that the iAudio does not support ic3 tags or w/e theyre called, so to organize your music, you get to set up every little folder :D

while your statements are generally true, they don't really apply to ipod video circumstances. I've converted from several different formats/codecs to .mp4s, and there really is no noticable quality loss when converting to mp4. I've gone straight from dvd vobs to mp4, dvd->avi/divx->mp4 and you can't tell the difference at all. Conversion does take time, but using videora and converting from xvid to mp4, it is about a 1-1 ratio. I do a lot of custom dvd creation, and would kill for this type of conversion rate, so it isn't a big deal to me. Just que what you want to convert, and when you wake up it will all be done. It's also somewhat comforting to know that all of the videos I have converted will play and display properly. Just because player X supports divx or whatever doesn't mean every divx video out there will play on it. The only annoying thing about the 5g ipod's video playback is that you have to mess with resolutions to get correct "widescreen playback". Hopefully apple will fix this soon. I didn't get the 5g for its video playback specifically, but have been very pleasantly suprised by it. video is clear, sharp, and very easy to watch. I reguarily watch mine in class and on the bus, and its easy to hold the ipod at an angle comfortable to watch. The same can't be said for other small a/v players I've used.

Videora is free. Codecs are free. If you want to be able to one-click convert a dvd you need to pay for a program like PQ, but honestly using dvd-decrypter and then videora is pretty damn easy and effiicent.
