I'm considering purchasing a 16GB unit as a refurb direct from Apple for $219.00.

1. Are the refurbs the latest and greatest? (hardware & software upgrades)
2. Are there any plans for a new model soon?
3. How does web browsing compare to a Pocket PC running Opera?
3. How's the YouTube experience? Is it easy to use? Does it closely resemble the full, desktop version? Any features cut out, like viewing more videos from the same user?
4. Can I use any ear 3.5mm ear buds/headphones?

1 - Would expect them to be, though the refurb may be the previous gen hardware... you'd have to verify that when you buy it (but it should have the latest software)

2 - They just released a new model... so no new models anytime soon.

3 - Safari is a great, full featured browser. It only lacks flash support. (FAAAARRRR better than any WinMo browser I have ever used, and I've had a lot of WinMo phones)

4 - YouTube is nice... I'm pretty sure you can use it to view other videos by the same person. I'm not big on youtube so I can't say what features are missing.

5 - as far as I know, you can use any set of earbuds... not sure if the ipod touch had the same recessed jack as the original iPhone though.

Thanks for the info. Here is the page for the refurb unit, but it doesn't give much indication of gen 2 specs - just the hardware volume control and external speaker, I think.

The iPod Touch doesn't have the recessed jack, so any set of earbuds can be used :)

3. Safari IMO destroys Opera on WinMo. Really no comparison, to be quite honest...Opera doesn't even zoom in on the div that you double-tap on.

I say go for it man...its a great investment. Just take note that I believe that these are the first gen units, as they include the plastic stand. The newer units do not.

Thanks. I added it to my cart and the part # is FA627LL/B. I assume that's a 1st gen or are the part #s not relevant to the gen?

The picture is of a 1st gen. Its probably too early to have 2nd gen refurbs.

Maybe I'll wait then. I like the idea of external buttons for volume control and a external speaker, but, then again, $219 is hard to beat.

I'm posting this from the 2g touch and agree that the browsing experience is better than opera and especially ie from a samsung blackjack 2 winmo 6.0 phone. Although alot of fun comes from pinching the screen anytime you wanna zoom.

I never got a chance to hear the 1g touch, but reports on head-fi talk of much improved sonics. Compared to my 1g nano, the soundstage is bigger and individual instruments can be heard with much greater detail.

The back is still that retarded slippery chrome however. :-(

I just checked YouTube and didn't see a way to view more from same uploader. You have search, top rated, most viewed, etc. It's no desktop experience, but it sure provides laughs on the small screen. :)

Don't get too excited about the speaker because it's basically useless. The external volume controls imo are too stuck to the ipod and I often have to really press hard on it. I haven't used any other mobile web browsers but I'd want the alternatives to be just like Safari mobile as it's so easy to use and so accessible with the touchscreen. Youtube is very well integrated into the device as it is custom formatted to fit on the screen nicely. Last but not least the stock headphones are ok for casual listening but they sound like crap to me so I'm looking to invest in a more audiophile oriented pair that will let me fully enjoy my music and yes any 3.5mm headphones will work.

YouTube only works well if you're connected to wifi or at least 3G. If you're trying to view it from the Edge network, forget about it.

Agreed on the tough volume buttons. I'm afraid my fingers going to break. I do find the speaker useful in a very quiet room however.

As for headphones, the etymotic er 6i's lack a bit of bass, but provide more than enough clarity for me. I think they're around 80 now. I definitely get lost in the music with this combo. Whereas the old nano just couldn't pull me in and of course the included ibuds go directly in the trash.

I forgot to mention my only experience with YouTube's from the touch and wifi. It does tear up the battery tho.

That refurb 16gig is the old generation. You can tell because the framing is the dark material they used instead of the shiny chrome that they use on the new one.

Another thing to add is the Ipod Touch 2nd gen supports an external microphone, so eventually programs like Shazam and Midomi will support them. I'm very happy with mine, especially since I added the full skin from bestskinsever.. no more slippery chrome :)

Yeah, I'm really starting to lean towards the 2nd gen model. If I end up with one or the other I will defiantly order a BSE. I've had them on my previous iPod and cell phone, and now my Zune. Nothin' like keeping the perfect mirror finish on the back of a iPod. :)

I have a 32G first gen and I love the thing... I find myself using it at home to check email and minor web stuff rather than opening the laptop or going to the office to use the desktop.

I ended up with a 2nd gen touch. I'm posting from it now...still getting used to the keyboard. Overall, I'm quite inpessed.

So the BSE's as good as the Brando or Power Support Crystal film then? No orange peel effect, etc? What about difficulty in application?

EDIT: I just ordered one. For $10, I don't see how I could go wrong. Also, I found this amusing at the end of the purchase:

Try not to mistake this envelope for junk mail and throw it out. Yes, this happens!

Tell your parents, wife or girlfriend about Best Skins Ever before your order arrives. They think the word Skin means pr0n and will throw it out before you ever see it. Yes, this happens too!

The BSE's do have a bit of orange peel effect, but I remember reading on the ilounge forums that the IS's were no different. They can be a trick to install. Expect to take about a 20 minutes to get it installed correctly and get (most) all of the air/water pockets out. Make sure your in a dust free environment. It takes 12 or so hours for the small bubbles to completely work themselves out and "cure" to the device. Search Youtube for instructions for the BSE or IS--that should give you a good idea of how to install it.
