iPod Shuffle gen-2 help

My lil bro just got one for his birthday today. I followed the steps...download and install iTunes, then plug the player in.

It asked me to update the firmware to 1.01, so I did. Then it said it would restart iTunes.

After it restarted iTunes, putting music on it didn't work. I would get a "unable to read from or write to iPod" error. So I restarted my comp and killed all other progs. Which did absolutely nothing.

Then I tried reverting it back to it's old firmware. No go.

Anybody have a clue what I should do? I really wanted him to have this for tomorrow for school, too...

My mom wants to return it if I can't figure it out...and this thing is too cool to do that with...

try switching usb/firewire ports
