iPod protection clarification

I'm familiar with Apple allowing iTunes music to only be shared on 2? 3? other devices, but what can you do from iPod to iPod? Can you take an MP3 you ripped yourself, put it on an iPod, then transfer it from the iPod to another computer to another iPod?

Make sense? Any "can" and "can't do's" you can tell me about it would be nice.
