Not a noob... but I'm a bit ignorant on this whole ipod thing.

A friend is upgrading his pc for his daughter. He keeps stressing the ipod issue with me. I assume its some sort of portable music device that connects to a computer in a regular way. if this is the case, any standard card/speakers 2.1+ should do, yes ? The ipod should support its own music as it pulls from the HDD... right?

I was going to order a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS for him. I figure that is a great card... should be fine.

I will go with the assumtion that you know nothing of the iPod (just to be safe/thorough :) ):

The iPod is a portable music player that supports mp3, aac, wav, and I think a couple of other formats. Out of the box, the iPod connects to your computer via Firewire, but there are separate cables you can buy to connect to USB2.0. On the software end, the iPod will communicate with the free iTunes software (available on www.itunes.com, also comes with the iPod) which, in turn, connects to your speakers. You can play music off of the iPod, through the firewire/USB2.0 link, through iTunes, and then through your speakers if you wish.

As for sound card quality, the Creative Audigy series is great for gaming/DVD-playing/casual music listening. The only problem (some) people have with Creative cards is that the drivers (or, more correctly, the 'software suite') that it comes with takes up more resources than it needs to, and it basically takes over all audio on your computer. With some configurations, the Audigy 2 series has been known to cause errors/random freezing in some computers, although this is generally the minority.

Personally, if I were to purchase an audio card for simple music/dvd/gaming, I would probably buy an M-Audio or Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card, as they are cheaper, have simpler drivers, and are generally more reliable than the Creative cards.

Clarification: the newest generation iPods ship with FireWire and USB 2.0 cables standard. You don't have to buy them extra.

Edit: (BTW, I am selling my Audigy 2 Platinum (non ZS) if you wanna get a good deal on one. I never really had too much trouble with it that wasn't my fault, its in great condition!)

I have noticed one trend, however: those that have had trouble with the Audigy (of any flavor) have had Athlon processors.

My ASUS P4C800E Deluxe(s) have had nothing *but* various flavors of the Audigy for sound (when not using the onboard audio). One A2 and one ZS got fried (however, it was my fault in both cases) and I have a ZS Gamer in it right now.

Other than the two that died, I have had *no* issues.

My only quibble (and it isn't the Audigy's fault) is there is no detection mechanism for Dolby audio types in applications that can use it (namely, ATI's Digital Television app in ATI MMC). I use the ZS's DD decoder for this (and the Inspire 5300s connected to it) and i would like to know what sort of source audio is getting decoded.
 
I have an Asus P4P800 motherboard with a P4c 2.4ghz processor, and an Audigy 1 (MP3 version, I think...lol), and have had a few issues with it in EverQuest. Enough to make me yank the card out. The onboard audio works fine. The onboard audio is not so great when I hook up my USB Midi controller and software synth, but I don't use this that often. I am considering picking up an M-Audio card for any music creation, and see how it works in EQ (and other games). BTW, for the record, I HATE creatives normal installation app, but it will let you install only drivers (it probably sneaks in some other stuff, not sure there).
