iPod... need 'phone amp?

I've been reading around on headphone.com and am considering getting a headphone amp. They are honest in that it's not worth getting an amp without good headphones first. I use Sony MDR-V150s with my iPod. They were $40 and I love them to death.

Although I like my headphones, I realise they are pretty low end in terms of what I COULD get.

Anyway, if I were to splurge on some phones upwards of $150, I want to know if it's really worth getting an amp for the iPod. I can understand why a whimpy $20 CD player would have crappy amplification, but I would hope that the electronics driving the iPod's headphone jack are a bit better, considering the thing set me back $300.
 
you paid $300 for the hard drive and cool looks. People spend almost $300 on audigy zs platinums and they are no better for powering high end headphones either. Hell some people spend thousands on receivers and they still need a headphone amp to power high end stuff.
if you want good headphones that don't REQUIRE an amp look at some grado sr-60's.
 
While some phones basically or do require an amp. A headphone amp will usually help even cheaper headphones, or just show off how cheap they really are...In any case, if youre looking for high end headphones for portable use you would want to stick with a smaller amp. smaller amps=supermini, airhead, or a cmoy if you want a cheap but usefull amp.
 
The only headphones that truly REQUIRE an amp are ones along the lines of AKG 1000's, Stax phones, and Sennheiser He60/90. Headphone amps are a good inverstment, but by no means a requirement. My Sennheiser Hd570's and 650's sound fine off of a standard CD player or line-out on an A2ZS. However, they do sound nicer off my Gilmore V2 amp. Stick with a nice pair of headphones, and save up some money for a nice amp later.
 
yeah the ipod can defintely hold its own, my HD590's work just peachy on my ipod ;D
