iPod nano (1st generation) Replacement Program

http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano_replacement/?cid=CDM-US-DM-P0010121-CON&cp=em--&sr=em

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

Replacement Process
You may order a replacement unit via the web. Click here to begin.

Your iPod nano serial number will be checked to verify that it is eligible for this program. You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen).

If you have a personalized iPod nano, you will receive a non-personalized replacement. Make sure to use iTunes to back up any data on your current iPod nano before sending it in for a replacement unit.

Additional Information
Identifying an iPod nano (1st gen):

It has a black or white plastic front and a silver metal back - later iPod nano models have a metal front and back. See images on this web page.
If you need assistance with placing an order, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and bring your iPod nano with you for serial number validation.

Your replacement iPod product is warranted to be free from defects for 90 days from the date of service.

Ya, i think i had given one to my sister ages ago when i got a 3rd gen so got to see if she can send it back.

Uh oh I just remembered that I replaced the original battery because it wasn't holding much charge. Do you think that will affect getting a replacement?

I'll be very interested to see what they send as a replacement, seriously doubt they have 5 year old inventory laying around anymore.

Maybe they will send everyone a Touch? :D

Still have mine (and use it daily). Just signed up for the replacement. My battery only lasts about 15 minutes

No kidding. This totally put a damper on it lol. I'm wondering how long we have to send the ipod back to them. My thinking is this: wait until the last possible minute to send it back and then maybe they will have run out of 1st gen refurbs and will ship something else. Any chance of that happening??

i am sure they have an inventory kept, also wonder if stores return to apple what ever they dont sell, i mean i am sure they have a large inventory considering how fast apple releases v 1.1 , 1.2 et cetera just after first release.

Has anyone gotten their package to mail back theirs yet? Its been 5 business days + saturday since I got the email saying to expect the package within 2 business days.

Not yet and I signed up at the beginning. I do know some people got their replacements before their boxes.

I got my package yesterday. Gotta get it sent out now..

I got my box Monday. Is there any time frame we need to send it in by? I wasn't thinking and had the box sent to my house while I'm still at college (lol). I could have my parents send me the box but I figure since I'll be home in a couple weeks why bother.

You have thirty days to get it back to them from when you opened the ticket.

According to the email I got from apple its 10 days.

To avoid cancellation of this replacement request, you must return the original to Apple within ten (10) business days. If you no longer require service, simply dispose of the package Apple sends you.

Its been 13 days since I submitted my claim, 10 business days since the claim, still no box to send it back in.

Well crap I could have sworn I read 30 days. I better get mine in the mail tomorrow!

From this point you can take it to any applestore and talk to someone at the genius bar. Tell them you are there about the recall. If it qualifies they will replace it with the same generation and capacity. Externall it will look and feel brand new, internally it will have a new battery and most likely reconditioned circuit board.

I had to go pull mine Nano from my parent's shop. They were using it for the music in the resturant. So this morning I finally took the time to check it, and mine is covered by the recall.

Glad it didn't cause an issue in the restaurant. EEK.

got my box the day before thxgiving. finally shipped it out yesterday.

Guess I'll have to wait for the 30 days to expire since I still have not received my box, I think I filled my claim on Nov 15th.

Well, I got 2 envelopes(2 nano's). Be careful how you open them, they will be the same ones you use. Also, it says you have 160 days from the time the ticket was open. After that, you must submit a new ticket.

I finally got my box about a week and a half ago, its been sitting at step 3 "replacement pending" since the 14th...so hopefully soon.

I believe they had mine since the 16th but I just got an email saying they have sent out the replacement and it should be here in a few days.

YES! I just got mine and it's a current gen iPod Nano touch 8gb! Freaking sweet free upgrade

I just got my return envelope Tuesday. So today I will be shipping it out.

Well Apple has moved up even higher in my book now that they replaced my 1gen nano with a current gen nano. Mad props to them.

my replacement is on its way back. hoping its a 6th gen!

Btw, you should have an email telling you Serial Number of Replacement Product. If you go here and enter the serial number it will tell you what product it correlates to.
