Ipod/itune question

I have a quick question about ipods.... really itunes. If want to upload my existing mp3s to my ipod, I know I would need to first import them into itunes. My question is what really happens when you import them. Does itunes actually convert them in any way or does it just "show" itunes where the files are?

I dont have an ipod or itunes, I am just trying to so my research before purchase. The creative zen is looking the best so far.
 
iTunes will merely "add" them to the Library, meaning just the files wherever they happen to be, basically creating shortcuts to get to them. The older versions of iTunes were set to "Copy songs to the iTunes folder when adding to Library" which would, as expected, copy the files to the iTunes music folder (under Windows it's usually in My Music\iTunes\etc).

So if you've got a partition with some mp3 files on it, and you used an older version of iTunes, it would copy them over to the My Music\iTunes\etc folder meaning you'd have double copies on your system, but iTunes would only play the songs from the copies in the iTunes folder.

Newer versions of iTunes don't do that copy by default anymore; you can set it to do that but most people don't need it since they have the music on their hard drive someplace already - why have them double copied and still only play one of 'em? :)

iTunes does not convert files anymore either even if you choose to import them into the Library. After they're in the Library you can right click on whatever song or songs you highlight and choose to "Convert to AAC" etc, based on the conversion settings you set up under the Importing tab.

No, it does not convert anythong to AAC unless you tell it to. However, if you download music from the iTunes music store it will be protected and in AAC format.
