OK so my iPod is two years old. I've had to buy new earbuds three times (my fault.) Now, for some reason, when I take my iPod running with me (it's a 4G 20GB) it stops playing even when the Hold Switch is engaged. That is, it stops as if the earbuds have been removed or something even though no such thing has occurred. If I hit "Play" it resumes. Is there a specific reason for this, such as a corrupt MP3 file, damage to the hard drive, or something else? The unit has given me the "sad iPod" face twice and I have smacked it both times, and it works. I haven't seen the "sad" face for two months now.

The Short Version: Do I have a dying iPod and need a new one? It works fine except under the above circumstance (and it eventually just played anyway, it only did this at the beginning of my run).
 
You shouldn't be running with a harddrive based ipod in the first place. that's one of the reasons they invented the solid state nano and mini. also why there's no nike+ipod support for the harddrive based models. There's too many moving parts inside a harddrive to be constantly bouncing it up and down for extended periods of time.

Both are correct that you should not run with the hard drive base iPod.
Though I have the same version (maybe, 20gb also), and many times I am walking around with my iPod listening and it just stops. I figured out it has to do with the connection between the Earbuds (Headphones) and the iPod. Your iPod is probably just not getting as solid of a connection as it once was, same as mine.
 
Even though they are hard drive based, they stand up to running pretty well even if they aren't intended for it.

I have a 3G 20Gb that has NEVER caused me problems, and I use it every day. The only problems I have had with it are recently. The hold switch, even when hold is off, prevents you from using the scroll wheel. Flick it on and off a few times and it works great. :D

What I've been noticing is that the older models have stood the test of time while the newer models tend to break beyond repair quite often.
 
I had this same problem with my Zune a couple of months ago. I don't use it for running, I also agree that a hard drive based system isn't good for a lot of abuse (not saying that you are giving yours any). I rely on the flash memory for activities. Anyway, I use my zune for my car, home, etc. and I had a problem with it "pausing" at random times too. After a while in my car I figured out it was where the headphone jack was connected and if I moved the unit. So if I kept my zune still it would play, but when I picked it up to change stuff it would pause. It drove me crazy! I called Zune and they tried some firmware updates, resets, blah blah, nothing. I sent it in and they told me it was a faulty headphone jack.
I'm not saying that's what your problem is, but it sounds like what I went through. Hope you figure it out and get it fixed. I wanted to chuck mine many times, and if I had been running with it, who knows what would have happened...
 
I would say that if it is not headphone related, it is probably a loose hardrive... my friend's 4G does the same thing, but only his freezes and doesn't come back, so who knows :confused:
 
My 3G 20gb iPod skips and/or has trouble finishing songs if it's in my pants pocket and I walk too fast. Like everyone else, I'm guessing it's a hard drive issue.

I'm still waiting for a 16gb flash based music player to come out, so I can retire my iPod. :(

Versus the iPod classics:

Playback time (80GB model)

* Music playback time: Up to 30 hours when fully charged
* Video playback time: Up to 5 hours when fully charged

Playback time (160GB model)

* Music playback time: Up to 40 hours when fully charged
* Video playback time: Up to 7 hours when fully charged
 
Who uses a MP3 player for 22 hours straight? Be responsible enough to put it in a docking station at the end of the night and I highly doubt you'll have any battery issues.

Apple claims the battery life is 22 hours, but in real life, it's definitely less than that like the past iPods. For me, it's not only battery, but other features and supported formats too. The Creative Zen is looking really nice right about now, but iPods definitely have the best user interface.

Really...my brother's 5.5gen iPod (80gb) is only about 10 minutes off of the mark time.

From what I read the battery actually lasts a lot longer than the 22 hours suggested.
 
*Shrugs* I guess it's just the older ones that had lower than estimated battery life. I stand corrected.
