IPOD for pictures ?

My father wants to get something that he can use to transfer pictures on to when on vacation.
he wants to be able to do this without his laptop. is this possible with a ipod? he would want a 60 gig because his camera is a 8+ mega pixel camera and each shot takes up a meg and a half. of space.
does the ipod standard 60 gig have the ability to directly connect to something like a fire wire or usb digital camera?

also, how much should i expect to pay for a 60 gig ipod apable of photos.

if an ipod cant do the transfer of pix without a laptop, what could he use besides an ipod to store the pictures on and do so without a computer?
also, if ipods can handle this transfer, do i need to get the ipod picture, or will a ipod video work as well?

The ipod would work, but he would have to buy an add on interface to be between the ipod
