iPod 3rd Gen. 20 gb Problems

okay i have a 20 gb iPod its third generation. I had it working for a couple of days then yesterday it came across a song it couldn't read. I tried to skip to the next song. It skipped but kept going. Went through all my songs only way i could get it to stop was pause it. So i looked up the apple website said to reset it if your have playback issues. I did that and now i get a folder with an exclamation point. after awhile it goes to disk mode and says 'ok to disconnect'. When i plug it into my computer via the firewire it doesn't show up in 'My Computer' or in itunes. It does show up in device manager as a non-working device. In the the properties it says 'device can not be started (code 10)'.

My computer is running windows xp sp2, iTunes 4.7.1 and the latest ipod updater which does not see an ipod plugged in.

I can't restore it or update it. In the disk mode state the ipods buttons and touch wheel don''t respond other than to reset it.

The ipod was fomatted for windows but i don't know what version of the software it was. i can't even check now.

So is there anything i can do or is it just dead and i need it replaced? Any and all help will be appreciated.
 
try formatting using windows to do the format (control panel - admin tools - computer managment...find it and format it). However, my 20 gig click wheel seems to be having a similar problem :( i cant format in windows either. When i click on it in computer managment...it gives me like 4 errors.
 
I looked up computer management but it too doesn't see the ipod the only place that sees it is the device manager. thanks for the tip though.
 
From the lack of responses it seems there is no way to fix this. I figured it's bad data on the hard drive.

I'm still hopeing someone has figured this out.

Here is the question. So how do you get a computer to recognize the hard drive/ipod so that you can format it? There is bad data on the hard drive so the ipod OS cann't do much of anything. I'm thinking there has to be a way to have the hard drive directly connected to a computer ( a laptop maybe).

Any help would be great.

BTW there is no warranty so having it replaced by apple is too expensive for now.
 
I had this same exact issue with my apple ipod (although it was a 4th gen). I had to open the ipod, disconnect the power, let it lay for a few minutes and reconnect the power. This fixed the problem, although temporarily because i eventually ended up replacing the ipod in it's entirety due to it's hard drive randomly doing the same and clicking...so hjopefully you have better luck than me.
