I want to get a web enabled phone. I've got at&t and also own an iPod and a Palm TX.

Web access first then phone features next.

pros centro... Cheaper, actual keyboard(not crazy on touch screen)

Pros iPhone.... newer, better camera, bigger screen,

Convince me to buy one or the other please.

Well, for web access I certainly wouldn't choose the Centro. I'm currently using a Centro on the Sprint network and am continually let down by the shortcomings of both PalmOS and the Blazer browser.

That bad huh? Is it just lots of pages don't load? Or is it no Java/flash etc....

Anyone know how well iPhone does sites like myspace/facebook?

I think that the Centro has more capabilities, but the IPhone is simpler. I actually really like the touch keyboard - it takes time to get used to. Also the fact that the Iphone is a phone and an iPod is very nice.

The iPhone definitely wins for browsing. As good as the Centro is as a general-purpose budget smartphone, Safari is still pretty much the best mobile browser out there.

I've never really considered the Iphone vs the Centro, but I own a Centro myself and I love it. It does have it's shortcomings, but everything does. I get on the web all the time with it. Blazer isn't bad. You can use it perfectly fine, but it doesn't pan-out quite like using IE or Firefox on your desktop. I use OperaMini on my Centro, however, be warned that OperaMini doesn't official support the Centro, and it locks mine up every now and again.

For the touchscreen, The Centro beats the Iphone to a bloody pulp. The Iphone's screen is actually glass, so when you're typing you have virtually no tactile feedback. I've seen other phones where when you press a "button" on the touchscreen, you can actually feel a vibration on your finger, mimicking the feeling of pushing a real button. It's a neat feature and should become standard for touchscreens. Unfortunately, the Centro doesn't have this, but it's touch screen is standard fare and quite easy to use. The Keyboard on the Centro seems like a potential dealbreaker to many too. It's small, yes, but it's still very easy to use. You'd think that you have to carefully pick out which key you want to press, but I have medium sized hands and I can type as well with this phone as I can any other QWERTY phone. My favorite is still the Treo 755p though :)

As a music player, it could be a toss up. I never really used the Iphone for music, or longevity, so I can't say how it stands up the to the Centro. I'm just assuming it's alot like the Ipod Touch. On the Centro, Sprint has included a full version of PTunes Deluxe (A $30 or $40 value), and it's very nice. Ptunes can handle many audio formats including mp3, wav, wma, flac, and aac, so it was a win for me, since 75% of my music is flac. While the Iphone has built in 8Gb or 16Gb storage, the Palm has 55Mb storage built-in, and can accomodate any standard SDHC card. There are tons of forum posts about people saying the Centro can't take more than a 4Gb MicroSDHC card, but it's not true. The Centro it self can take any MicroSDHC card, but PalmOS's Card Info app can only see the card in 4Gb chunks. Annoying yes, but can be easily overlooked IMHO.

As far as Battery life goes, I again can't say much for the Iphone. I'm sure it can't have a big battery, so I'm assuming it must be charged every night or you're screwed. As for the Centro, this is the only major shortcoming in my views. The standard battery is rated for 1150ma/h. On a full charge, I can wipe the battery out with 5.5 hours of music playing through the external speaker with the volume pegged. If you lower the volume, you're sure to get better battery life, but with basic headphones (simple over-the-ear types), in a public setting, you pretty much need full-volume, or damn near it to hear your music. Using IEMs (In Ear Monitors) will allow you to lower the volume, and still hear your music, but these things aren't for everyone. For me, they hurt my ears, and I don't feel they provide a natural soundstage, but that's another topic, in another thread, in another forum altogether. Back to the battery issue, if you charge your phone only while you sleep like I do, and want your phone to act as your phone, PDA, mobile internet, and MP3 player, than get an extended battery. They're about $50. If you want to do all these things, but can adjust to charging your phone whenever you can, (at your home desk, at the office, while you sleep, etc) than you're golden and can use it to your hearts content.

As far as call Quality goes, The Centro offers great call quality. Everyone I've talked to on it sounded better and they said I sounded better too. I should mention that by better, I mean, compared to my basic Samsung unit I had before I got the Centro. The Iphone sounded pretty good too.

If you're looking at build-quality, the Centro isn't bad, though the Iphone is made with less plastic. The Centro can look toy-like at times, but I've dropped mine a few times and it's one tough little phone. Just holding it you can feel it's not too heavy, but substantial enough to know you're holding a phone/PDA.

All things considered, I think the Centro vs the Iphone is an apples to pears comparison. The Palm Centro, is a Phone/PDA. The Iphone is the an MP3/Phone/Web device. The Iphone is more for entertainment, while the Palm is more for productivity. Yes, they can both do many of the same things, but they're not the same type of devices. The Iphone is cooler, but The PalmOS has millions of paid/freeware/open-source programs/hacks out there, it's not even funny. Either way you go, you've got a bitchin' phone. Personally, I go for the Centro. Hopefully, I've helped you make a decision instead of just saying "Dude x phone sucks, get y phone."

wife and i have centro and iphone respectively...

regardless of capabilities, research the centro reliability. her's is pretty bad at just two months from reception issues to headjack issues.

my gen 1 iphone has been a treat. hiccups encountered included the fudged up 2.0 upgrade rollout and a few bugs thereafter but 2.1 has been relatively stable for me.

only thing i could point out that bugs me is the occassionaly safari browser crash
and my last phone was a trusty treo 650

Thank you everybody for all your help!!!

At the moment I'm leaning twords iPhone but haven't just yet made up my mind.

I'm more looking to use the phone in webbrower before apps and other features. While I'd load music on an iPhone I'd still use my iPod for the music and my TX for the palm apps.

Does either have any good java support to go to a java enabled site? Like pogo?

Will prob make a decision tomorrow nite.

Thanks again!

Palm used distribute Java Micro Environment for... well, doing Java things, but they've stopped distributing it. It didn't take me terribly long to find, but it was somewhat of a hunt. I and several other Palm-using members here and link you to it if you wish.

oh and subjectively speaking, after owning a Treo that I loved, I was hesitant to get the iPhone.

but once i opened it and fiddled with it, I was hooked on the iphone from day 1

Thanks Again Everybody!!!

Will be getting iPhone and let you all know what I think in a couple days!

Go touch and play with them and make sure you like them before you get stuck with one. The iPhone is nice, wouldnt work for me. I personally will be getting the Fuze shortly. Would have imported the European version but I want 3g.

Both of your options are pretty good phones, I have not really liked Palms offerings in a while though.

OK got the iPhone yesterday. To answer some of my questions.... Typing-will take some getting used to but not bad. Java is NOT supported. Myspace not god looking on phone (I guess they use too much java or flash?) Facebook is great on it. Screen is spectacular.

Are you using Safari to browse myspace and facebook? Not sure if you were aware of this, but there are myspace and facebook apps in the appstore that work way better for using these sites.

Dammit! Another one lost to the coolness factor of an iPhone. We'll show them, won't we Palm? We're still kings of productivity.

*evil laughs*

Knew of facebook app but not the myspace one. Myspace one is OK but definitely not the web version lol.

I love the web browsing on my iPhone, far better than anything else I've tried. Although I have to say it CAN be a little slow at times, at rendering.

Get a G1 Derek. :D

Glad you took the advice. Hope you enjoy the iPhone as much as I do mine. It is not perfect but nothing is. You would think they could get the simple features right.

Unfortunately not, i used to be all about palm and thought windows mobile was the suck, and at one point that was true. I've had a Treo 600, 650, and now have 700p but i can tell you right now im done with palm os. It's clear that access (the company that acquired palm) has no intention of pushing the platform forward or even keeping it alive for that matter. Its stagnant and dated. The version of palm os that ships with the centro is practically identical to the version on the 600 from over 5 years ago. You'd think that with so many years under their belt with practically no feature additions they would at least have a stable platform but i can tell you that my 700p at least, is as stable as nitroglycerin. I don't plan on owning any more palm phone (unless when i take my 700p in for service they give me a 755p, but im still not buying any). For my next phone im looking at android but the G1 has a few to many shortcomings for me to seriously consider it.

I have to agree, the Palm OS is dated and it shows.

Too true buddy! The only main prob I have w the iPhone is now theres even more things to drain my wallet in the app store.

OK so besides my Bejeweled 2 who knows of must have apps for the iPhone (free preferred)? And is there a better battery meter app?
