I had to reformat my laptop recently because of a virus, and I had backed up my pictures and music on my iPhone 3G. However, those pictures and songs are no longer on my pc...how can I bring back all my pictures (not taken with my iPhone) and songs (not bought from the iTunes store) from my iPhone to the pc again??
I really don't want to lose all my music and especially my pictures..but I can't find a way to transfer them back...
Please please help... :'(

wrong place to post but... im pretty sure you just plug it in to a computer with the standard ipod/phone usb cord, and go to where your harddrives are listed, and it should be shown as an external HD

Just plug the phone in, it will show up under "My Computer" or "Computer" (if you are a Vista or XP user) as a external USB drive. Open it up like you would a USB drive. For everything else, use the sync tool in iTunes, tell it to make a back up of your iPhone.

On a side not, the purple text is annoying...

iPhones don't work like a regular iPod. You can't just plug it in an have it as a HDD.
You have to use a program like DiskAid to explore your iPhone directory and depending on what you are trying to access, you might need to jailbreak the phone.

I have a 3G and it shows like a normal USB drive. I can access it like one too.

oh btw, if you simply plug your iPhone to a PC and have iTunes sync without having the original files in your PC, iTunes will wipe out your iPhone.

i forgot that you can access pictures taken with an iPhone this way.
However, pictures copied into an iPhone and the music files won't work this way.

yeh I've tried..it only works with the pics taken with the iPhone.. so wat do I do? is there a way to bring bak my pics (taken with another camera) that are no longer on my pc?

unfortunately no... ITunes doesn't play fair when it comes to transferring data ("illegal" music, and applications) directly from the iphone to another computer. In order to backup music and applications stored on the phone is by physically downloading all of your "legally purchased" music on itunes again then transfer and sync all of your data back on the phone. So if you physically don’t own a legitimate copy of your songs on itunes then there is no way for you to back up your songs, especially songs that you personally ripped from cds or downloaded from Peer to Peer programs / websites.

if you try and sync your phone right now to a playlist that doesn't exist on your hard drive then it will simply erase all of your current music/apps on your phone and create a new profile.

forgot to mention that you might be able to directly copy all of your mp4 files if you have a jailbroken IPhone. Mine is currently jailbroken and im fully able to SSH into the phone and mess around with all the core files/folders avilable on my phone.

how do i jailbreak the iPhone (isn't that dangerous?) and what are the steps I need to take to get my pictures and songs back to my pc after i have done so? :'(

Try iFunbox

This will work for your Music and Video but not your photos. I have the same situation but I need to recover my Photos most importantly.

The only thing I found that works for the photos isTansee iPhone Transfer Photo BUT it is $19.95. I am about to bite the bullet and pay that price, hey maybe we can share a license? 50/50? ;) I have downloaded the trial and it works fine, the image resolution it pulls off the phone is decent, the trial lets you transfer the top 6 photos only, kinda weak. I have 3,500 photos that I need to recover.
