iPhone os 4.0

My iPhone 3G is already shit slow. I can't imagine it getting any worse.
Exactly. 3GS = snappy. 3G = not snappy. Giving the 3G more shit to chew on is the very definition of a Bad Idea.

it looks iphone multitask is not tru multitask on the end! Android here i come!
Android's multitasking isn't all that different from OS 4.0's, really.

BULL FUCKING SHIT. If had a dollar for everytime Shit-fari crashed or locked up I would be a rich man.
Safari very rarely crashes for me. Once in a blue moon.

I'm annoyed that multi-tasking is 3gs only.

I'm not. When OS 4.0 comes out, the 3G will be two years old. Meaning, it will have lived through its two year contract life. Perfect time to pick up an iPhone HD and get 4.0 bundled.

My 3G contract expires in August. I'll be picking up an iPhone HD that very day.

Edit: One thing I am annoyed about: no lock screen improvements. Why can't we get a weather widget, a recent email count/subject display, and an upcoming calendar events feed on the home screen?

Looks interesting.

The multi-tasking is wierd tho... they say it's limited to GPS/VOIP/audio apps... what abotu other apps that could benefit from persistent connections, like IM or something?
As for the 3G not getting it... i'm pretty much in agreement with this one. It's an old platform, let it die out and gradually replace itself.

custom wallpapers are nice, now that the screen is cleaned up. they didn't make much sense with all the icons on the screen... it just made it harder to look at

I particularly don't care either way about much of the features besides unified mail FINALLY.
I hate having to keep backing out of each mailbox several levels just to see my other email. such a PITA.

valve1138, 0ptinal, phide,

I used to be a happy user. I'm a creature of habit and visit the same sites daily. The keyboard problem was supposed to have been fixed, but still happens. I feel like I would have to get an iPhoneHD to get a crash-free phone again.

Every time I see Jobs or his cronies talking about how iPhone's shit don't stink or see another simulated iPhone ad I want to punch the nearest Mac user.

lol.

never had iphone ever crash. maybe its your hardware.

why do you people want to run multiple programs in the background? you want to suck your battery down faster and let viruses run? then don't get an iphone. get android or winmo 7. I'd like to keep my phone virus free by design thank you very much.

Regular sites: [H], kotaku, mainstream gaming sites, espn, digg, news sites. Problems encountered:
1. Enter URL, loading animation in URL does not move. Can't open a new tab. Forced to reboot phone.
2. Bring up keyboard for mail, text, anything. Keyboard will NOT disappear. Forced to reboot phone.

I know my comment could be considered offensive, and I don't want to offend non-fanbois, i.e normal people. If the iPhone OS was called Windows it would be a laughingstock when you examine the bugs.

Reinstalling the shitty OS seems to make the problem go away for a week or 2, but out of the blue it happens again. I'm not going to any particularly fancy sites either.

Are you restoring from backups when you restore the phone?

It sounds like there is something wrong in the restore process for you, because that's not normal behavior, I visit all those same sites too (except espn I suppose) and don't experience crashes ever... even with multiple tabs open, loading links from emails into safari and it opening a new tab, etc..

I don't have any extra apps and use the phone only for calls and web browser. I restore my contacts, but totally wiping the phone and manually adding my contacts would be a gigantic PITA. My contacts *shouldn't* affect safari, but who knows.

IIRC, the slow keyboard problem was fixed in pre-3.0 firmware. After I updated to 3.0 problems began again. It seems to happen out of the blue. The phone has been well taken care of and looks almost brand new for an almost 2 year old phone.

I'm going to keep my eye on OS 4.0 and not be fooled by their simulated demonstrations.

What I mean that instead of 'restore from backup' you just select 'setup as new iPhone' and then check the box in the iPhone page to sync your contacts, or whatever else you need, that'll make sure you're starting with a clean slate. I haven't had slow keyboard since I don't even know how long and I know it was fixed for a lot of people a long time ago, haven't heard of it since till you/now.

I kind of gave up trying to restore or reinstall. The last time I did this I googled for instructions and IIRC I followed instructions to give me a "clean" install. Can't hurt to try yet again. I figure either I fix my phone or find out if it will blend.

Haha, vidz or shenz!

I'm lovin' folders and multi-tasking so far, really clean interface, really fast, safari seems snappier, although mms from photo library doesn't work, i have to pick the image/video from the messages app instead, I suspect I'll run into a lot of these little roundabout broken things in a developer preview, but so far so good for daily use.

i have the 3GS... i don't have to buy a new phone, so i'm happy. especially considering i just bought it and entered into a 2 year contract last july. i'm really looking forward to the new e-mail features and audio stream-through. finally, XM app may be of greater value!

The lack of update to the notifications and perhaps the lock screen is the only thing bugging me at this point. I'd like to see more major refinements to the UI, but that's not Apple's style.

Was kinda pissed at the exclusion of the 3G, but I plan to get the Iphone HD (or whatever it's called) anyway, so I guess it's a non-issue. Now I'm curious to see what goodies that thing will have.

mmmkay

I hear brickphones are trouble free

Just curious how Apple will market a 4th gen phone this Summer, if one is still even coming out ?

I mean we know about 4.0 OS update now, and if you have the latest iPhone3GS, you get the free update. So why would you need a new 4th gen phone over a 3GS ? Sure the 4th might be faster, ok...but the same exact features will be on all models that support 4.0 OS ?

I would think from a marketing standpoint and business model, they should have made this 4.0 update only available on the next 4th generation iPhone, so the geeks that love Steve HandJob's have a reason to upgrade.

Great comment I read on engadget;

Why does Steve lie like an ass that he is?

If an iPhone 1st gen can multitask once jailbroken, then that same iphone 1st gen can multi task. Another of his screw everyone who got in at the front door mentality still.

But we all know his fan base wont care because he's Steve Handjob's.

The difference is Apple has different standards for performance than say, the jailbreak community. Which is why I don't jailbreak anymore, I disliked the performance hits those things imposed and it was generally a mess and not worth it, especially with the advent of the app store.

You'll get new features..probably multi-core so faster. Maybe a better screen. Better camera. You'll get 4G speed, hopefully. It can be an evolutionary update...the 3GS was.

This is easy. Anyone with a 1st gen iPhone will be due for a cheap upgrade. So get get a 4G later this year. And like the person above me said...Apple sets limits on what they do. If they don't think a 1st gen will do it and provide the same experience that they want, they won't support it. Simple as that. This is the downside of the Apple method. The good side is that things work really, really well. But Apple will put artificial limits on things to maintain a certain level of quality. Don't like it? Go buy an Android. Simple as that.

Macrumors has a video of a guy demonstrating that grand central dispatch has been ported to iPhone OS, so multi-core is looking like a real possibility right now.

Or an SMT-capable processor.

This was dull. Nothing innovative for consumers. It's necessary, but was hoping that Apple would "Think Different" instead of just taking stuff from jb apps. Still looks like I'll need to jail break cause sbsettings, texting at lock screen & within apps, downloading files, and quite a few other items were not addressed. If for some reason the new iphone can't be jb then I might switch over to android (WebOS would be ideal, but it needs good hardware).

I have my Palm Pre (Plus would be better).
It rocks, especially with the CPU overclocked to 720Mhz.
Along with PreWare and WebApps and the official Palm Catalog, its quickly filling every need.

Couple questions:

If I have an IM or Twitter session going and I switch to another app, will it continue to run in the background, bringing in new messages?

What about video in the background? If I'm streaming a TWiT program and want to check my mail, will the video play while in the background where I can still hear the audio? Or will it completely stop and have to be restarted?

I read the Engadget liveblog of the whole event today. All the talk about how SJ wants to serve me some full screen ad every 3 minutes kind of sickens me. I've been on the Apple bandwagon for about 6 months since I bought a $400 Ipod 3g.

This whole event gives me the overwhelming urge to go jailbreak my Ipod and get the simple features that Apple keeps ignoring (ie, info on my lock screen).

Not looking forward to an update that creates a new advertising platform on a device I chunked down $400 for and pay for all kinds of other content on - music, movies, apps, games, books, etc.

People need to stop freaking out about the Ads. It's nothing. It's just an Apple run Ad service..just like apps use now. They aren't going to shove these ads at you. If an app dev wants to they can use them..simple as that. Just like they do now for ad supported apps.

I think e method of implementation for the multitasking is great, cant wait to see it on the iPad. And from how forstall described it, it looks like the app basically puts itself into a sleep state, using a few resources as possible, while maintaining a modicum of functionality, if only to continue supplying audio, or notifications of events, but not requiring much in the way of resources.

The iBooks app is a logical extension from the iPad. The ads look like they I'll be very useful for devs who don't want to charge for their applications, but still have good applications. The game center looks like a mobile xbox live, which will be very good for gaming. I wonder how long nintendo and Sony will last with the iphone os gaining speed in the gaming dept.

Folders is a nice addition, I'll probably only use 4 on the phone, and 6 on the pad, keeping them on the dock.

Over all, from the small number of demoed additions, the update definitely looks A+

LOL at people wanting multitasking on a iPhone with a 412 mhz Arm 11 with 128mb ram. It may work jail-broken, but no one can fault Apple for setting a standard for what is necessary, and having that hardware below it.

@Kaos:
They mentioned in the Q&A that the Twitter/IM seems to work better in push notifications in their opinion. I tend to think they should have multitasking too, but frankly the most i ever use my phone to IM is though facebook, i use texting and emails much more.

@atreidesgoldenpath
Did you really pay attention to it? iAd will only be in apps like ads are today. Its up to the app dev to decied if they want them in THEIR APP not to the entire device. Also, it will be like the banner ads you see now, small until you hit it then it fills up the screen. No "Fullscreen ads delivered every 3 min". Its just an easier way for devs to get a profit stream from there work without having to charge money for an app. I have a feeling that Apple will limit iAd use to free apps anyway, so if you buy an app, you wont get the ads.

It does bring up an interesting question for me though as a dev, is how the pricing model is going to work. I would have to see some figures on iad support vs app purchase. Infact, i wonder if you will start to see a "Ad supported or Ad Free" model, Same app, no restrictions, just up to the end user if they buy it outright, or deal with the ads.

Hate to break it to you, but free apps already have advertising in them, generally speaking. All Apple is doing is creating a framework to more easily implement and update those ads, and so earn a slice of the pie as a result. Increased advertising in the mobile world is happening whether you like it or not, so at least Apple was good enough to let third parties keep most of the revenue. This will help keep developers loyal to the App Store.

Not to mention providing an easier method of implementation for those developers

Not surprised about the multitasking only on GS, standard 3G is fairly slow and shit.

Rossi - I'm not surprised either. The 3G is basically an original iPhone with a 3G antenna and improved battery, but that's it. The CPU is very slow by today's standards.

When I still had my 3G iPhone it was pretty damn slow without multitasking, attempting to multitask usually resulted in crashes but the 3GS runs backgrounder like a champ.
