Iphone 5s activation issue

I have a friend who received an iPhone 5s secondhand. It was disabled to begin with but after doing a restore and update its asking for an apple id and pw. My friend doesn't have this information. Is there anything I can do to bypass it? I tried to jailbreak with pangu but it says it must be activated first.

P.S. I was wondering how I could tell the iOS version that was added during the update. Itunes doesn't say, I'm assuming that it would've updated it to the most recent supported version of iOS 8.x.x.x not entirely sure thought. Thanks in advance.

Im guessing this iPhone is still attached to someones account and what SHOULD have happened is that Find my iPhone been disabled before the reformat and selling of the phone.

You will need to find the owner of that iPhone and ask them to login, disable find my iPhone, and you can either do another reformat or login with the correct iTunes account and enable find my iPhone.

-Best of Luck.

This feature is called "Activation Lock." It's essentially a theft deterrent. The only way around it is stated above.
The previous owner can login to www.icloud.com/find and disable it from there by removing the phone from their account. (If, of course the device isn't stolen.) Otherwise, your friend has a great paper weight.

The phone is a paperweight until that information is correctly entered. Working as intended to ensure the phone wasn't stolen and just wiped before being sold. If he bought it from a legitimate seller then he should have no problem getting the guy to unlock the phone.
