iPhone 4G Thread

These rumors suck. They don't put thought into them at all.

The 4G would not increase the screen resolution. The DPI is already "high enough". All the apps would need to be scaled slightly if there were a resolution bump which would decrease the sharpness. The iPad has higher resolution because its a larger screen. In fact the iPad could get a resolution bump in the future as the DPI is still lower than the iPhone.

There probably won't have a increase in camera resolution either as the sensor is so tiny. If they increased the size of the camera then resolution can increase.

There's only one thing for sure and its the 4G will be "cheap" meaning it'll cost the same as the 3G S but have more features and push the 3G S down.

The only rumor that has a chance is front facing camera. This makes sense because Apple tends to try to push technology. By adding this feature networks are forced to increase data access and bandwidth.

Otherwise I think this is going to be a mainly software update. They might not even do a front facing camera this year. Could be next year for the 4G S

I dunno about that.

It seems to me they're "hard-coding" all the apps for the 1024x768 resolution, so changing it later on would affect all the existing iPad apps.

I don't think they're doing anything for current iPad apps to allow them to resize smoothly to potentially bigger resolutions later on...

Since it's been a while since anyone speculated or threw up new rumors, I'll post the things I've heard recently:

John Gruber has posted the following rumors (http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/03/29/wsj):

1. It's going to be called the iPhone HD.
2. It'll support multi-tasking 3rd party apps.
3. Front-facing camera for video calls.
4. Apple's A4 CPU powered.
5. 960 × 640 resolution.

According to the WSJ, AT&T will get it in the summer, and then in the fall/holiday season, Verizon will be getting it as well. Source: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304370304575152242601774892.html

Overall though, I think the gap between the iPhone and its competitors is going to continue to slim.

I wish i could get paid for making easy guesses at what might be in the next iPhone :D.
Honestly though, im starting to wonder about VZW. We all want it, but the iPad being put on AT&T and the lack of contract requirement on new iPhones is telling. AT&T might be trying alot harder to keep Apple since they know if a VZW iPhone exists, there is going to be a lot of subscribers moving.

Well, just to clarify, a couple of months before the 3GS was released, AT&T and Apple did the same thing- they were selling contract-free 3G models at the Apple store. It's the trend when a new model is right around the corner so they can liquidate additional inventory for people who are hesitant on signing new contracts.

I'd say it's win-win for all parties involved if Verizon gets it.

1. Choice of carrier for the consumer.
2. Reduced network congestion on AT&T's network making it better for people sticking with 'em.
3. More $ for Apple and their numbers continue to go up.

I don't think Apple will think about moving to VZW until LTE is implemented fully. Since right now you can't access data and phone at the same time on CDMA it just doesn't make sense to have a crippled (feature wise) OS on one carrier vs. another.

More rumors:

-Expose-type app switcher (for multi-tasking), similar to on OS X
-Global Inbox
-Contacts on home screen

Updated the first post with both links.

Apple is going to really just sit, wait, and 1-up everyone. I'd like to see how it stands up to the HTC Evo.

Overall though, I think the gap between the iPhone and its competitors is going to continue to slim.

960x640 isn't gonna happen.

There's no point in quadrupling the DPI. The small benefits will only be appreciated by very few people, and 4 times the pixels to push will cut the battery life by 3-4~.

Edit: Even though, I personally, would absolutely love that resolution (assuming the battery life doesn't get worse than 3GS). I'm just being realistic in knowing it won't happen.

I doubt the iPhoneHD or 4th generation will crush the Android beast EVO 4G, the EVO will be on a WiMax network getting awesome download speeds, and the screen size and resolution is pretty sweet, as well as the hardware itself being crazy fast.

Not saying Apple will not match it and be super close, I just don't think realistically the new iPhone will blow the EVO 4G away, they will most likely be a straight tie with each other.

Cool thing is, looks like both phones will be offering front facing cameras for video conferencing. That will be an amazing new smart phone feature to have :) But how much data will that require, as well as battery power ?

I really hope they work on reception. My 3g and and my roommate's 3GS get terrible reception in our place while the other dumbphone on ATT gets 5 bars.

All I want is double the capacity from the 3gs to fit all my music and improved battery life so it doesn't die after four hours of light internet usage.

I get 5 bars everywhere on my 3GS.

For once, Canada FTW. :D

They get terrible reception. This is a known issue. Come to my house, stand next to me, and watch your signal hover around 3 bars, while my Bold stays solid at 5. That is not the network, it is the device.

I think the 3GS is awesome. Unless moved to nice OLED display, I wouldn't upgrade. It performs perfectly, and with the jailbreak I have no need for multi-tasking support.

The only that would make me a loyal Apple customer is an actual open platform. Like the ability to use my device in mass storage mode to manually transfer music would be nice. I really, really don't like apple, but they make a great integrated package.

OLED displays are only nice in darkened rooms. The technology is more or less useless for phones, IMO.

I' bought an OLED mobile device about 3 years ago and it was fine outside. I can't read my iPhone 3GS display in direct sunlight either. It was a iRiver Clix 2 and comparing it side to side with my iPhone makes me realize what a piece of shit the iPhone display is for a $600 device.

Here's a Zune HD in a well-lit environment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1EqEZe3lcI. At 1:29 they're both outside. Considering how dim the OLED display is to the iPhone at max brightness, outdoor performance is about equal. This level of brightness is fine for me, but I imagine that the next round of OLED mobile displays will brighter.

The advantage of OLED is most applicable to rich media consumption. The people who complain about OLED performance when trying to look through the Sun's reflection must be the same ones who love watching their HDTVs outside.

Also, iPhone drains battery life incredibly quickly at anything more than 50% brightness, to the point where I can't get more than a half day charge (~7 hours) at higher brigthness levels (with bluetooth and push off). Here's a video comparing OLED power consumption to LCD by Samsung:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1lh-jhzxvM

Imo, after having used an OLED mobile device and many LCD based mobile devices, LCD's are next to useless in comparison.

I get 4-5 bars pretty much everywhere I've been in Victoria BC with my 3GS other than the waterfront towards Washington state (Fairfield/cook st village/beacon hill/mile 0 etc) where there is no coverage be it Bell/Telus or Rogers. Just AT&T and Tmobile roaming. Even in a small rural area like Ucluelet I get five bars in my room. Wish I could say the same thing for my Sierra 306 usb hspa+ modem which gets 2 bars in the same location. Oh how I long for a decent ISP/telecom service and none of this 5gb monthly cap bullshit. :(

If the 5GB cap was dropped, I'd just drop my home service.

Not sure I'd go that far. The latency is usually good but it can spike for a bit at times. Not to mention the specialty routers for these modems are pretty expensive and a pita to get in Canada if you want to use it on your home network. Using a Cradlepoint ctr500 connected to my gigabit switch here.

Apparently Bell has a maximum cap on the bill of $300 and you can keep on using it without worry ...or at least that is what the bell rep in the store said. I am sure there is some termination point in the AUP/FAP somewhere like Telus's 10gb maximum overage before disconnection.

I hope they give us something... im about to pull the trigger on a phone
My n82 has its screen broken and only way i can check text msg is on a TV using the tv out cable... fucking annoying

These specs sound nice... only thing holding me back from purchasing a nexus one or omnia 2 is that the iphone has great games (plus emu's of older consoles)

It'll be like last year, when OS 3.0 was previewed but wasn't released until the summer.

This is a preview, not a release.

I think Apple needed to do this right after the iPad launch because the new Windows Phone 7 OS is right around the corner and Android keeps gaining market share every day. They need to have at least 1 'wow' feature, or at least that's what I'm hoping for.

I didn't upgrade to a 3GS because I figured the updates weren't substantial but in retrospect, I regret not updating simply for the increased speed. My phone is jailbroken for 2 reasons:

1. Multi-tasking
2. SBSettings to quickly turn on/off services.

If these two issues are handled with the new OS, I'll be happy. Sadly, I doubt they will.

A preview of what to expect out of OS 4.0 and iPhone 4G would be enough, im already prepared to wait till june

For me, its this phone or Samsung i9000 Galaxy S now... Galaxy S sounds sweet as its rumor to be 3x times faster than 3GS and runs android which its still a bit green gamewise

my goodness... if the 4g came out I would really consider going back to iphone.... I started with iphone, switched to E71, then Bold 9000, back to E71, and now am just going to stick with my nokia until summer. I want to get the HTC desire, but I do want to see what Jobs has to offer us in the summer :)

I heard rumors that it can have touch sensitive in the back of the phone. I wonder what it will do and does it means that I can't have my cover anymore??? Lol, invisible shield will make more money.

Your rumors are a few months out of date. No one's pushed that for a while.

Not only is the back sensitive, there's also a OLED on there.

The first app to use this other screen is called flip. You flip your iphone like a coin and call heads or tails. Just think of what that implies for the hardware design.
