So here's the deal.

I'm on a family share plan and I got my iphone 3gs in August of last year. That means I can upgrade to an iphone 4 for 200$ next year in august I think or for 400$ now.

The plot thickens: my sister has a 3gs as well, and is eligible for an upgrade. She couldn't care less about an iphone 4.

If she gets the upgrade priced iphone 4 for 200$, will she be able to somehow use her old iphone 3gs and give me the iphone 4, which I could then activate or hacktivate using either my current sim which I would have to cut, or a new micro sim?

The real question here is how to get my sister back on her iphone 3gs after she goes into the store and upgrades to the 4.

Could I do this by buying the 4 off the apple website, and then just never having her activate it? Just jailbreak +hacktivate it on my end?

I read somewhere that microsims are tied to their hardware using ICCID to prevent people from using ipad sims in their phones, so I dont think (?) I could use one of those little micro-sim adapters.

I've put iphone 4 microsim into my jbed/unlocked iphone 2g w/o an issue, worked just fine. So all you need is to cut your own SIM to microSIM size and cut out an adapter from a piece of plastic (old credit card will do) for your sister.

You won't need to JB/unlock anything if you are on AT&T network, you need to do that if you gonna use T-mobile or travel overseas and use other carriers.

so to put a microsim in an iphone 3gs the 3gs would have to be jb'd/unlocked? I dont think my sister wants to do that.

I will jb the iphone 4 regardless, but I'm just trying to figure out how to make sure my sister still can use her 3gs if she gives me the iphone 4. the only way to go back to her 3gs sim would be to go into the att store and ask them to reactivate that sim, right? that probably wouldn't fly with them right after she 'upgraded'

There's no way to get an iphone 4 that is unactivated with the discount is there? Ordering online or something? That way I could just activate it with my sim and she could just go on using her phone with her normal sim?

Won't they just let you use her upgrade on your line? Verizon does it without any issues. I didn't even have to talk to a person. I logged into my account online, transferred the upgrade from the eligible line to mine, and ordered my Droid X. Very easy.

Just go to the store and use her upgrade to get you the phone. Just tell them you're using her upgrade but it's replacing your phone. Change nothing on your sister's except the contract renewal date. I just did it using my mom's option and had no problem. As long as you sync your 3GS beforehand you have nothing to worry about once you get your new phone. Just sync the new one after you get it and you'll be all set. I lost nothing and didn't have to modify a sim card.

you worry too much. Swapping SIMs is easy, and you are both are on AT&T networks, so no jb/unlock required. All you need is to insert the microSIM with adapter into your sister's 3GS and cut yours into microsim to fit into ip4. Or just do what bwp73 said :D
