Hi all,

So I've read some contradictory data.last night. At work now so can't get back to the link.

Does the iPad play .mkv files types? or does it just support all mkv encoded .mov?
I'm trying to figure out if anything's changed in the supported file types.
Video files will have to be 720p or lower because the iPad will not downscale right?
I will have to convert anything to .mov, right?

I've handbraked a ton of dvds to the "Universal" setting so I can play on my Xbox360, iPhone and AppleTV which gets saved as .m4v's . They play on my iPad too.

I can't tell you about the down sampling though because I'm only doing DVDs from my collection which aren't even 720p to begin with.

H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Straight from the official specs page. I don't understand why there would be conflicting information about its video support.

I use the apple TV format on handbrake converting MKV's and they work no problem. The issue's I do have is audio conversion when I encode mp4's to mp4 apple tv

I use Air Video to watch all my videos from my server, works great on everything I've tried (from 480p .avi files to 1080p .mkv's). Best part is the same app works on both the ipad/iphone/ipod touch, so you only need to buy one thing. Totally worth the $3 it costs, streaming my 1080p stuff over the internet works awesome and being able to convert on the fly really simplifies things.

Does Air Video still require Java? They used to list Java as required software for Windows streaming but that requirement is curiously no longer listed.

I don't think so. Air Video does rock. They have Air Video Free which limits you two 5 folders and 5 videos but it's a great way to test it out.

What issues are you having with audio conversion?
The video comes out fine but the audio comes out long and drawn out. Completely out of sync and unusable extending the playing time to 5-6 hours. Only for my mp4 files though. My mkv's or avi's convert fine. You would think the mp4's would work fine since they're 720P but the audio format is in DTS usually which the iPad won't play. Maybe I should just remux the audio on those files.

No. Apple's stuff (and Microsoft's for that matter) do not and never will support MKV. It's a format that is in direct competition to their own format as well as the industry-standard mp4 container.

Wait for the next generation; it'll have more features...G3 network for one...

What are you talking about?

The iPad w/ 3G (not G3) is right around the corner, like a week away, and while it's safe to say the next iPad will have more/new features, nobody can speculate as to what, considering Apple's secrecy (which was just tested by the Gizmodo/iPhone leak), but still... what?

(is this a don't feed the troll situation because I'm feeling kinda trolled.)
