iPad battery life

I feel like my iPad battery is really getting hammered. It used to last a long time, now not so much. Reminds me of my life, but I digress.

However, its just a feeling. My feeling is based on watching 2 movies (90-120 minutes a pop, on device not streaming) and some email checking. I was at 10% life.

Aside from timing it myself, can I (me personally, not Apple) tell me how long it's lasting? Like is there a service menu that I can access?

I have seen this on Gizmodo but I don't want to bother if I am mistaken, and I am certainly NOT trying to get a new iPad. Mine is in perfect condition (always been in the otterbox case) aside from the battery.

Edit. Typing this post on my iPad took 2-3% off the rated battery power (24% to 21%, but I dunno if the 24% was ready to flip to the 23%). The 2 edits dropped me to 20%.

the applecare for an ipad specifically mentions covering the battery. If you are still under warranty you have a very valid case to argue.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned I am out of warranty and did not buy AppleCare.

Any reason for not taking it into an Apple store? They're generally pretty good about helping customers with their products, even if it isn't under warranty.

It does sound like you're having quite a lot of battery life loss. Generally I get about 10 hours of usage from my ipad (there are days when I'll be on it for almost all of my work day, when there are no classes but I'm still required to be in), but that's just web browsing. I don't game/watch movies on it often enough to judge the time there.

There are a plethora of apps for battery usage out there. Many of them log the data and use it to predict your time left, so I can't imagine that they don't also have an option to view your usage time and what not.

Just google iPad Battery Utility.

Edit - Battery Doctor Pro seems to be the best one.

Take it to the Apple store and they'll help you out. A lot of the out of warranty help comes down to being nice to the Apple staff... be nice to them and they'll be nice back ;)

Just a stab in the dark here

Are you on iOS5?

Wasn't there a bug in the time zone switching thing that was causing battery drain?

I had thought there was something that could be disabled for now to fix the problem until apple releases a fix.

I know this was the case for my sisters iPhone4s.. dunno if it applies to the iPad at all. Give it a quick google and see if it may apply/help you.

Good luck

Don't bother with the Apple store advice. I am having the same issue; battery life has been terrible (dropping from the original 9-10 hours down to maybe 2-3 hours) and I've tried every tip I can find to improve it, to no avail. I took it to the Apple Store and they claim to not have access to any of the diagnostic data needed to know if the battery really is degrading. They claimed such data doesn’t exist but as the leader of a team of software engineers who write battery management software for electrical vehicles, I know much, much better. All the “Genius Bar” geniuses could say is that if battery life seems poor, they could replace it for a hundred bucks. They can’t actually diagnose or troubleshoot anything.
