IP Camera / NVR Suggestions

Hi All,

I'm looking to help a friend add video surveillance to his building. He had his fire suppression/alarm company come in with a quote. For hardware only and some project management (he would install), they wanted just over 12K. This consisted of the following:

1 x 4TB TruVision NVR (16 channel)
24 port POE switch
8 x TruVision 1.3MP day/night mini dome IP cameras, 2.8-12mm and 49' IR range with mounting hardware
2 x day/night bullet IP camera

I'm looking to give him a ballpark of something similar. The camera world is a bit new to me and I can't seem to find any well organized information about it. One group says Foscams are great, others say they are crap (I assume the truth lies in the middle and depends on your needs).

That being said, here are the requirements:
- 10 cameras (3 outdoor, 7 indoor), assume low/no light for all. All will be fixed, no PTZ necessary.
- Need NVR with display capabilities. They want a TV in the office where the staff can view cameras without having to open a browser. I'd like to avoid a PC if possible and would like some kind of NVR 'appliance' (I've been looking into the Synology NAS + Surveillance Station, not sure if anyone has any thoughts)
- This is partly for security/identification of any break-ins if possible. They have had some very minor theft, but also some 'weird' occurrences where doors that were locked are found opened, etc.

So, what are some of the 'great value' names that would be recommended? For routers, you typically see MicroTik, Zyxel, for WAPs, Ubiquiti, etc. - I would be all over Ubiquiti AirVision if they offered IR, but no such luck. Any site recommendations for where to compare/purchase?

Are you sure that he really needs IP cams? Simply going to analog 600TVL will cut the cost down significantly.

I just picked up a Hikvision 2032 and the picture is really great.

there is a dome version of basically the same camera as well. I think generally the IR on the cameras is pretty weak, so you can always put a couple IR lights in key areas to help the cameras.

I am going to run it with a Zoneminder vm, but i have read great things about Blue Iris (windows only) as well. 12k does seem like a lot for only 8 cameras though...

We setup Ubiquiti AirCam and NVR for a customers warehouse; super easy and the picture is great. They're running 7 cameras just to monitor entrances and road access. The Ubiquiti NVR isn't very powerful and doesn't have much storage, but you can always build your NVR, they giveaway the software.

Synology has an okay nvr with a device that can display onto a tv screen without a pc.

We are using Digital Watchdog's NVR for recording/archiving of 28 cameras and a Synology NAS with two VisualStations for 4 cameras that needed lobby displays.

All cameras are Axis brand, mix between M3004 and M3024's

I have one site setup with 15 of the airvision cameras and nvr. The guy loves it.

I have 4x airvision setup in the shop with their nvr in my office. The UI is up in chrome and needs to be refreshed at least once a day or you get the overlay that chases itself.

Next to that I have a 55" tv with Security Monitor Pro that just works. Requires no refresh. I have 2 other tvs setup streaming 3 or 4 of those cameras as well. I am using dlink dcs930L/932L/2210 and use the d-link POE injcotrs to drop power to them. Our power at the shop has issues form time to time where we lose a transformer off-premise. During these events one of these cameras may shit out and need a replacement, among other items like printers, equipment motors, etc.

I like the Security Monitor Pro solution as it just works. I am a ubiquity fan, but their NVR/Camera solution is meh. I expected more out of it in regard to the performance of the UI. I'd like to leave it own on live view but have been unable to. They have a free version that does not record or do the additional cameras. We have a few teenagers that feel they got the world by the balls that trip on their own chin when we play the footage back of them fucking off. It has paid for itself a few times :)
