I have an iomega ix2 2TB (2x 1TB) NAS - the old boxier version.
The drives are Seagate 7200rpm.
I already fixed the cooling on it so it won't kill the drives - added an extra fan, increased the size of the exhaust holes for the original fan, added more intake holes, and wired up the fans to always be on.
Speed is what I am concerned about. When I had first set it up, the speed was horrible.
It does have a really old version of the firmware so I am going to see if that helps at all as the newest firmware says it helps with performance.
I really wanted to see a changelog for all the versions of firmware newer than mine, but iomega doesn't list any of the older versions at all.
Anybody here with one of these units that can comment of speed with the newest firmware?
Also, what about RAID0 speed? From what I could find, the combined size default setting is a linear array. I found instructions on how to convert it to RAID0, but couldn't find any data on what the change is speed over mirrored or linear is.
I am also interested in disabling encryption as I don't need that and I suspect that that is the main cause of the slowness.
If the unit is still too slow for my tastes, I will probably just end up pulling the drives out and using them in my computer.
