Introducing Android 4.4...KitKat

Who gives a shit what they call it. I just can't see a huge upgrade in performance like we saw from 2.3 to 4.0 when 4.0 came out I was a happy camper

Not on my old Evo 3D. That was the worst OS update for an Android phone I've ever experienced. About 2 weeks after the update, I took my phone back to a tech shop for my carrier and asked for Gingerbread to be put back on. They wouldn't do it, saying that 4.0 was the only version supported and available. HTC's 4.0 update turned such an awesome phone into an unstable pile of shit.

Same thing with my wife's Rezound (which is the same hardware/software as the 3D). Her battery life and performance tanked hard after the ICS update and she has complained about it constantly since then. HTC really dropped the ball updating their phones prior to the One X. There's no excuse why Amaze/Sensation/Evo3D/Rezound never at least made it to 4.1.

I'm not a fan of htc when it comes to updates because stuff doesn't work right. I'm talking about my gs2 that is on 4.1.2 right now

If you're unfortunate enough to own an HTC that's not rooted, do everything in your power to avoid software updates. On my Aria a few years back, the "upgrade" from 2.1 to 2.2 resulted in a bug wherein placing a call to someone in my contacts would actually call a different contact further down the list. No joke.

The "upgrade" from 4.0 to 4.1 on my parents' AT&T One X did untold damage, too, ultimately forcing me to load them up with CM10 to make the phones usable.

Seems like there are plenty more stories where these came from.

I remember sending text messages to the wrong person on my HTC Hero as well. But I think it was a common issue among android devices at the time. It forced me to have to use handcent SMS instead.

Found a bunch at a Super Walmart.

Code got me $5.00 in my Google Wallet.

Is this real? Google's going insane on marketing this time around.

If you look at the image it is 150,000 prizes of the $5 code (also 1,000 nexus 7 as prizes), not every kitkat comes with the code. Assuming Google are paying out of pocket for both (keep in mind 30%, I believe, of that $5 spent in the store goes back to Google. Also many prizes may not be claimed fully or at all, and might lead users to buy more) that is still well under $1.5m, which is basically pocket change in the grand scheme of things for a company like Google.

For a comparison the rumored marketing budget for the Moto X was $500m USD.

GS2...as in Galaxy S2? From Samsung?

Yeah my sgh-t989 was running the same software as a note 2, I got this HTC one x and it's only running 4.1, tell me that shit makes any sense.
The problem with HTC is the updates suck ass, your lucky to even get them. No reason in the world why this one x hasn't gotten 4.1.2 or 4.2 it's way better then the sgh-t989 spec wise. Rooting and roming HTC phones is a pain in the ass too.

I thought getting this phone would be a decent upgrade software wise, apparently not. Looks like from now on I'm only buying stuff branded as nexus.

I could have sworn I read before that "K" was keylime pie. Did I just make that up in my head or did someone else see that too?

That's what almost every Android-centric website has been reporting the name to be for a long time. Then Google drops a bomb with the "K" designation being KitKat...for a 4.x release instead of 5.0 as was widely believed KLP to be.

From my understanding, the Android developers collectively decided that they like Kit Kat bars more than they like key lime pie, so someone sufficiently high up pulled some strings with Nestle to make a non-monetary agreement upon using the name.
