Interpolation [lcd], will it improve?

I have a few questions about interpolations with LCD's.

a) if the native resolution is 1600x1200 and i want to move down to 800x600 [notice divided by 2] will there be poor image quality? or will the LCD behave as if i was moving down to any other non native reso?

b) is interpolation something that the industry working to improve on? or am i really stuck at using native resolutions?

c) i wish crts werent so big =/
 
In theory 800x600 should not have interpolation problems, if you don't mind pixels bunched in groups of four. How your display actually looks in the real world is the question.

The real question is why in the world would you want to go 800x600 when you could go 1600x1200???

Interpolation can be fixed in two ways. One is by better hardware algorithms. The other is by higher and higher native resolutions. I don't expect there'll be a big improvement in interpolation anytime soon. However, I still wonder why different displays handle it so very well or so very poorly....

well, the question was completely hypothetical. I was wondering if 800x600 under a native reso of 16x12 would suffer the same fate as other non resolutions; curiousity if anything.

The biggest reason why i posted this is exactly what you said in your last sentence. Some lcds that ive seen (ie 710n [samsung]) handle interpolation alright, but others in the same class seem to be a lot worse.
 
I don't have any specific knowledge of the math behind interpolation other than to know it must exist and must operate withing certain contstraints.

One would think it has to be close to purse division though because otherwise you'd have aspect ratio or other proportional issues. It's not like you can squeeze the edges and put more quality into the middle like some 16:9 TV screen modes (the modes used to stretch NTSC signals).

Another factor come to think of it may also be element shape. I don't know how much if any variance there is in LCD pixel shapes from one to the next, but it occurs to me that results would vary greatly from square pixel to oblong ones, both vertically and horizontally.

All this to say that I really don't know. Oh well, back to 1600x1200.

Well, perhaps the real motive behind this question is that my father just greenlighted a new pc for me; and being competitive in fps games, playing at low resolutions is a must, however im willing to sacrifice some qualities of interpolations, because im very interested in purchasing an lcd.
 
Why do you play with low resolution to be competitive? If you are so competitive that you have to play at a really low res like 800x600, an LCD might be a poor choice for you...
