Internet - Stop/Starts help!!

Hi, having a problem with a brand new computer.. the internet keeps stopping/starting for no reason. I've tried
1- Turning off firewall / antivirus software
2- connects via ethernet and all other computers on network work fine
3- several browsers

Anyone got any ideas?

Windows XP Home BTW

Ok, removed Avast anti-virus and it seems ok now - has anyone ever found this program killed their internet connection? I'll run it for a day or two without anti-virus then try another free program.

Running without antivirus is the last thing you want to do. If removing Avast fixes it, load something else immediately, whether you're willing to pay for an AV package or not. On a windows xp machine, you are guaranteed to pick up viruses in a hurry.

BTW, I have never had Avast break an internet connection.
