Whats up guys, I have a quick question about how IE handles tabs and the Windows 7 taskbar. Is there a way to disable it just for IE? I like how chrome handles it, since I can click the icon in the taskbar and I am back to having chrome open just like it was. However with IE, I click the icon and have to find what tab I was on. Very stupid.

I know with other applications I can run it in compatibility mode for vVsta, however since IE is essentially built into windows you can't do this. Does anyone know a way around this issue?
 
in IE internet options on the general page take a look at the tabs -> settings
I use always open popups in a new window
I dislike the IE tabs so I limit one page per browser
I use firefox for my tabs and IE for work stuff
 
I don't see an option for disabling that unfortunately, I am sure that Microsoft really wants to push the feature, but I hate it so much. Surely other people do too.
 
I'm not sure what you're requesting. If you would like to turn off per-tab preview you may do so.

Tools->Internet Options->Settings (under Tabs under General)-> uncheck "show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar.

Restart IE

I want to disable this, when all I have open is 3+ tabs. I only want it to do that for multiple windows, like chrome works.

Right click your task bar -> Properties -> Select "Combine when task bar is full" from the drop down.

That isn't the desired result however, since I don't all of them expanded XP style, I want to get them Windows 7 style. To clarify:

I want them to look like the notepad icon, so that when I click it, it opens up the browser, and not the tab select popup if I have more than one tab open.

Hope that makes sense?
 
Oh when you have I.E. open just right click and say pin to task bar. That way when you click the icon it will open up a new window. If you already have a window open, just right click the icon on the task bar and open a new one from there.
 
Sorry it doesn't sound confusing to me when I explain it to myself...

I don't want to open a new window every time, I just want it so that when I click the button in the task bar it just opens the currently opened window of IE with all my tabs, and not bring up the tab selection menu. Where I have to click the tab I want in order for it to open the browser again.
 
The first thing I suggested does that. When it's on never combine then it will bring up the last active window with the tabs. So you want it so that it does that, but keeping the W7 "theme", is that correct? If so (that is a browser setting) here is what you do:

-Open I.E.
-Go to "Tools"
-Select Internet Options (or you could get there via control panel)
-On the "General" tab click on Settings under "Tabs"
-Uncheck this box:

Huh. I must be an idiot and unchecked the wrong box at first. My apologies for that, no wonder you were confused!

Glad I could help. :) How are you linking I.E.9? I'm still finding it hard to part ways with Google Chrome.
 
I think i'm going to try to disable "show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar" option myself
thanks OP, I forgot to start a similar topic when Win7 came out.
 
Honestly IE9 isn't that bad, unfortunately Microsoft doesn't allow an option to import stuff from Chrome which is honestly too bad. I think other than that is is a better browser, a few quirks that I can get used to. The best part is hardware acceleration, so I can surf image heavy threads and not have my browser come to an absolute crawl.
