Hey, my internet explorer has stopped working, my e-mail still connects and i can recieve that through thunderbird, but both mozilla firefox and internet explorer won't work, i've tried removing it from the windows components and then adding it again, but to no avail, any helps, i'm at my wits end and having to use my brother's laptop

They don't work? Can you be a bit more specific? If both browsers aren't working, the problem must be something else.

Do the browser windows open, and pages do not load? What exactly are they doing/not doing?

A few questions:
1. Do you have any software-firewalls installed?
2. Do you connect through a proxy-server?
3. Do you run any ad-blocking software that behaves like a proxy-server?

they both open but i get 'internet explorer cannot open this page' error, i run the network diagnostics programme it suggests and it says it has detected a winsock provider catalog is missing. i tried to install IE6 as i have IE7, but i can't as it says there is already a newer version on my computer.

1.Zonealarm
2.i'm a novice with computers, i know it connects to a router
3.Not that i know of

i tried to download an update for IE7 i believe, i ran a system restore to rty and see if that worked, but it didn't, i don't think anything else has changed

I'm pretty sure Microsoft included a way to rollback IE7, but I can't recall. Try Google?

Assuming we're talking Windows XP here: you can rollback to IE6 if you checked that option when installing IE7. Basically - you go to Add Remove Programs and remove IE 7. If the option doesn't appear (or if you're on Vista) you're out of luck...

Last time I had a similar issue it was a problem with my ISP's DNS server - it had no issues resolving its own e-mail server but couldn't resolve anything much beyond that...

1. What ISP do you have?
2. Try to run a tracert to some website (say www.cnn.com) from the command prompt to see what it returns, if anything. (The command is tracert www.cnn.com).
