According to a senior technical account manager at Microsoft New Zealand, the next beta of Internet Explorer 8 will be available to the public sometime in the third quarter of this year.

According to Nick MacKechnie, a senior technical account manager at Microsoft New Zealand, we can expect the next beta of Internet Explorer 8 to arrive in the third quarter of this year. And unlike the current test version, which is marked as a "developer preview," this version will be a public beta targeted at all consumers.

Eh!???

Didn't think they had fixed the problems with Explorer 7?

And Firefox is so much safer to use.

Another vote for "Firefox FTW". I tried IE7 and it drove me crazy, its worse than IE6.

Thank jebus, IE 7 is terrible. All Steve at Shacknews does is complain about it, and I myself have to double check and make sure that my own portfolio website can render properly for IE 7 while every single other web browser, Firefox, Safari, Camino, Opera, does WTF it is supposed to.

Oh, and Firefox 3 rules.

I've been using the IE8 beta for a few months now, and it's leaps and bounds ahead of IE7. I still use firefox for my daily time wasting, but use IE8 for most of our web apps that use any kind of activex. Some major apps like Siebel/Oracle don't work on IE7 either at all, but run flawlessly on IE8.

I'm not a huge fan of FF3 though...it's getting too bloated imo. Firefox was originally the lean alternative without all the extra crap...but now it has all the extra crap, and I don't see the point. So right now, I bounce back and forth between FF2 and IE8.

Sounds like you would like opera.

I used FF for years but after using opera for the last year or so when i use FF it feels like a slow bloated pig.

so it wont suck as much now? well pfft, i use IE anyway and just have firefox for emergencys, but i'd like people to stop telling me how much i suck for using IE, so that would be a nice "fix".

I like Firefox 3 and I fail to see how it's bloated...I'm even running it on a 15.4" laptop and I feel like it's actually more compact visually, than the previous version. I just don't like the fact that everything that used to be a pop up in firefox, such as remembering passwords, is now not a pop-up--it's a freakin' IE drop down menu from the navigation bar.

It is faster than FF2, that's enough for me.

They added so much junk into Firefox after 1.0 and are adding even more into 3. I use FF2 and Opera and only use IE to update windows or if some obscure website won't load in FF or Opera. They claim the memory usage of FF3 will be lower than FF2, currently FF2 uses more memory than any other browser on the internet but it was due to a flaw in code and not actually due to bloat of FF2.

I'd use Opera way more but so many websites don't render properly on it or just straight out crash Opera, i.e. Digg's new comment system page.

Are you really that worried about memory usage when you have 8GB of RAM? ;) I often have excel/word, video converter, explorer windows, torrent client, iTunes/winamp, and FF with 10+ tabs, and I still don't use all of my RAM (a measly 1GB on WinXP)

I've been using FF3 the past week or so and it seems a lot faster/more responsive to me. I don't know if it's using less memory but it seems quicker and that's what matters.

i'm pretty sure that at the desktops of microsoft certified people and desktops of microsoft employees... they would all be using Firefox....

I have 8GiB of ram in my PC... So I couldn't give a crap about excessive memory usage.. you know... you can just close your web browser when you have finished using it right.... this work machine I am on now (made of scraps)... which is primarily used for ghosting sealed oem windows onto hdds... has 256MB ram (singlecore 3500+)... i rarely have slowdowns using Firefox..

I have only one complaint about Firefox... updates are TOO often (and having 4 machines at home that i use to web browse (either by remote desktop for torrents or another room when i feel like a change of scenery or laptop when i have friends or myself watching a movie on the big screen), having 4 machines updating constantly like that is annoying)... I keep it updating... but.. seriously every week is a bit much... sure it takes about 30 seconds.. but its annoying when you just wanna check a few things quick... an update once every 2 months... now I'd love that...

But Internet Explorer? never heard of it.... sounds like malware.... speaking of malware.... yahoo toolbar anyone??? damn that thing hides in everything.... I've accidentally installed it numerous times.. being hidden in "custom" installation menus.... custom? whats so custom about not wanting an completely unrelated app?

Maybe I have to go out of my way to look for differences, but I've used both firefox and ie7 without noticing anything deal-breaking o_O. I really don't see why theres such a fanaticism over web browsers if the differences aren't that vast. They both... display webpages... and thats all I use em for.

*cough* arora *cough*

When the difference between IE7 open with 10 tabs and Firefox open with 10 tabs is under 100KB, you know you need an alternative to your alternative browser. The sad thing is, a fresh install of IE7 is faster than a fresh install of Firefox. But I'm not going to get into Gecko and it's massive memory leaks... there's a reason I use a browser designed for embedded systems.

Thats the point though, while other browsers including IE have been improving themselves firefox has just become more bloated and slower.

In the days of IE6 the difference was vast.

I have been using the FF3 beta and think its much better than FF2 however its still slower than opera.

Maybe with this they can match performance of FF3 and Opera :)

Also how can people tell FF3 is slower than FF2 ? WTF ? I can't help but think someone installed them wrong version :D
