I have an odd problem, after my DIR-655 died I got a new ASUS RT-N16. All the computers can connect to the router but Firefox/IE won't work. However everything else works such as MSN, Starcraft 2, and Warcraft 3. Everything might work for a few minutes after I reboot the router but only for a few minutes. If I plug in the cable modem straight into my laptop the internet works. I've tried switching the cable modem with Rogers and still the same problems persist. I thought it was the DIR-655 that died when it was having the same problems so I bought the ASUS, yet the still same problems. Please somebody help me!

Sounds like a dns issue or maybe your router isn't getting an ip address from your modem. Can you ping out to the internet when router is hooked up?

The router gets an IP address from the modem. What do you mean by can I ping out to the internet? I'm a networking amateur. :(

Sorry. :D

Open a command prompt and see if you can ping a website. In command prompt type: ping google.com
You should get a response something like this if DNS is working correctly:

Pinging google.com [74.125.95.103] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 74.125.95.103: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=53
Reply from 74.125.95.103: bytes=32 time=70ms TTL=53
Reply from 74.125.95.103: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=53
Reply from 74.125.95.103: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=53

Ping statistics for 74.125.95.103:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 25ms, Maximum = 70ms, Average = 36ms

If it says "Ping request could not find host google.com" then it would seem to indicate you aren't able to resolve DNS names. Try to ping an internet IP like 4.2.2.2, if you get replies then you definitely have a DNS problem. To fix that try setting the DNS forwarders on your router to OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) or 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1. You could also just set the DNS server settings on your network adapter to use those IPs.

does your new router and old one have the same internal ip addresses ?

I tried pinging google.com and it seems to work. The internet randomly works again. I tried earlier today and it didn't work but I had to leave the house so I didn't get a chance to reply and post what it said. I'll do this again once the internet doesn't work. When I ping 4.2.2.2 I get this.

Pinging 4.2.2.2 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=60ms TTL=49
Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=65ms TTL=49

No AV programs only MSE. I'm not sure what's a proxie program so most likely not, and I don't enter anything so I believe it's DHCP.

Check your internet settings make sure under connections proxies is not turned on, and make sure you turn off that stupid, automatically detect settings is turned off.

Also go into your windows firewall, and reset it remove all the rules.
