I know 32bit vista only lets you have 3 or 3.5gb of ram? forgot which is was for max...

Now on a computer with integrated graphics the ram is sharred, im thinking about upgrading the ram to 4gb. (comes with 2gb).... what would it show??

4gb of ram +256 mb shared video does it show in vista (if 3 is max) 2.75gb? or does it show 3gb

i could upgrade to 64bit but im thinking most painless

The most painless if you want to upgrade to 4GB of RAM is to upgrade to 64 Bit. As for your question, Vista 32 will only show you 3GB total. Whether is allocated to a GPU, or what not, it will only be able to address a maximum of 3GB total.

ehh ill eventually upgrade just wanted to know if it would use 256 for video seperate from the 3gb max vista uses

Despite what everyone says, Vista can run well on recent integrated graphics solutions if you get rid of all the crapware and bloat. It's mostly just a matter of being proactive about keeping Windows clean. If you've got three gigs of RAM, integrated graphics shouldn't be a problem unless you're running a billion background processes. Even if it were, I doubt the compromises you'd need to make for 64-bit Vista would be worth the benefit of the extra gig of RAM.

Vista 32-bit can address a maximum of 4GB of RAM including the address space allocated for such things as virtual memory and video memory. Even with integrated, putting in 4GB should give you about 3.5GB of usable memory. If you want to put in 4GB of RAM, you'll do fine with Vista 32-bit.

oh yeah i know vista is running fine no issues or anything. I just figured ram prices are fairly cheap now so why not upgrade. Right now its running at 1.75gb 256 for video...

also i know a friend that has 4gb of ram from his old notebook he is willing to give me for pretty cheap :) ($50 and no he isnt selling to anyone else haha)

It also depends on your hardware as the Intel 945 chipset has a memory limitation when addressing all 4 gigs of ram (and using 64-bit OS).

But I think you're talking about your Gateway with an AMD CPU, so just upgrade to a 64-bit OS and you're good to go.

I can confirm this with my macbook with integrated intel, runs fine, ran good with 1G of ram, but better with 2 under bootcamp.

3.75GB actually
