Interesting read

well seeing as how the guy that released the opencl mem test client clearly said he had no news for the openCL client.. what less then a month ago? im going with the last part of Mr Valentines post..

but like Tobit said its typical PG when it comes to estimated release dates.. did the same thing with the A3 client.. kept saying its coming this month.. 3 months later it finally showed up.. unlike the a3 bigadv they kept completely quiet and didnt bother to give a release date on it til a week or so before they came out even though we knew there were rumors about it from beta testers leaking information(not [H] beta testers)..

If I recall correctly, the folks over at oc.net originally started on BOINC (rosetta). They developed an app that let them cheat on the benchmark, then left in a huff when rosetta switched from client-side to server-side benchmarking and they couldn't cheat anymore. Count me against client-side performance measurement. =)

That said, there is obviously some major technical flaw with f@h's current benchmarking system. There's no CPU I'm aware of that has the same performance on 67xx as other WUs.

the performance im not all that worried about on the 6701/2's its the point value that needed to be fixed to compensate for the performance.. while yes you make twice the points compared to any other A3 WU.. its still not enough to make up for the PPD loss but its been running to long for them to change it now and its suppose to be phased out soon anyways..

They are for science, ATI/AMD are for OpenCL, ATI/AMD cards are popular now and under-utilized for folding, CUDA clients are already made so their programmers are freed up, all should equal an OpenCL client proceeding at full speed. Not just hope speaking :)

If it comes out soon, does anyone know if my 4870 will support the current version of OpenCL? I think it has version 1.0, but it's not exactly new. If it comes out next year, this won't matter because 6970 here I come :p

Oh boy, I am a bit down today. :(

I have been sneaking in testing and folding around work this week, and I have been able to put both SR2's back to folding the last 24 hours...

Nothing but 6701s, on both machines. Correction - there was a 6702 in there. But 5 straight each... I keep telling myself they are doing good work, but if points = science as they claim, then I am doing 35% of what my hardware is capable. This is demoralising.

I have downloaded BOINC/WCG and have a bunch of things running right now on SR2#1 for team HardOCP, seeing what it is all about...

Hope no-one thinks less of me...

If it's any consolation I have nothing but 67s on most of my SMP machines and some are just lowly quad cores, so it hurts bad on them. I think everyone is in the same boat. I try to reconcile the issue by knowing the research is being accomplished, and that's more important in the long run.

No man, you do what you have to do. It's your hardware and your decision what to do with it.

Why would we?

Bring back the goodness when/if you want.

I will say that I've been working on a '84 and '85 the last few days. However I did have to go though a bunch of not so fun WU to get to them.... meh whatever.

yeah PG is pushing 6701/2's definitely think the end for thes WU's is coming soon.. usually they push them for a day at most but not this long and effecting everyone..

Be nice if the project is coming to a close.

i think everyone hopes that.. they friggin suck because i lose over 1000 PPD and they take for effing ever to run.. usually ill stop my SMP client after i finish a WU(most take about 12 hours to run) and play BFBC2 so i dont lose bonus points on a WU.. but it takes me 30 friggin hours to run a 6701/2 WU so i end up losing 1000 bonus points stopping the client in the middle of the WU to play BFBC2..

Just ordered an ASUS 6870 from NewEgg for my new gaming box/main rig (to hold me over til Cayman). When it arrives, I'll run a single WU with the current client for shits and giggles.

Kyle and Brent just put their review up, but damn this is one efficient GPU. When we finally get the openCL GPU client, the ppd/watt ratio is definately going to be very interesting to see. The 5850's were very efficient GPU's and this review makes them look like a pig.

Don't feel bad. Folding2 has gotten nothing but a continuous string of 6701/2's until it just finally drew a 2686 earlier today.

Yeah, they posted the review about 15 minutes after I placed my order.. glad their review confirmed my decision to pull the trigger so early. I have never bought a product so early into a launch before. I had it charged to my card within 10 minutes of it appearing on NewEgg's site.

I'm definitely going to fire up some RC5-72 or a BOINC project as well to see how the STREAM performance is.

Which brand did you purchase? Even though I now use ATI video cards, I am still rather new to the ATI AIB vendors as I used to be a hardcore nVidia fan not long ago. When I built my gaming rig back in Feb, I jumped on XFX by default because they were the only 5850's in stock at Micro Center.

I went with the ASUS board. I wanted to go with the XFX but it is $40 more and I simply don't need the lifetime warranty as I doubt I will have the board longer than the 3 year warranty offered by ASUS. Now why I chose ASUS vs. the Sapphire, Gigabyte or MSI board? I'm not really sure. Probably because of the lack of stupid graphics on the cooler. However, ASUS's software does offer some voltage tweaking which might come in handy.

Nope as I am there as well.

why? because asus is better then gigabyte, MSI and Sapphire when it comes to high end overclocking.. if all your going to do is buy a card and mildly overclock then those 3 are the way to go since they are usually cheaper then asus and xfx..

Right now they are all the same price ($240) except for the XFX which is $40 higher probably because of the doube lifetime warranty. This is my first ATI card in over 3 years so, with all of them at the same price, I had no clue which one to choose when according to some reviews it looks like these are all using the same reference PCB anyway.

yeah when they are first released they all use the same reference PCB.. around the 3 month mark you will start seeing the aftermarket PCB's.. same goes with the prices.. you will start seeing rebates and stuff on the HIS and sapphire cards here in the next month or so for the christmas sales.. even priced the same asus gigabyte and xfx are really the only cards to go with because of the customer service.. i just hope we start seeing some more interesting designs and cards from XFX now that they wont be making nvidia cards anymore..

Alright, I had my little whinge, and will come back to folding when I can, after a bit of WCG, which seems a lot of fun, and a good antidote to the overclocking/folding/points/time per frame obsession of mine of late.

I just have to let the wcg units finish - you can hardly tie up Childhood Cancer research can you?!

But are we just wishful thinking that 6701s might be really wrapping up? Is that actually what they do at the end of a project - mass saturate the last units until it is gone?

Not always but it has occurred with some projects in the past. It could just be a cycle like what I often see with the GPU clients. Sometimes we get a spate of 353s and then they disappear for weeks and come back again, etc. It could be the same with the 67s, IDK. If I read the FF more often I might have a better idea and maybe someone who is a regular there knows why SMP, even -bigadv, has been inundated with these WUs the past several days. /shrug

I have 6701/6702 on all my SMP machines as well... It has happened in the past as well (I'm trying hard to remember what is a old project from 2-3 years ago who is also as painful as that 6701, damn me being old and memory failing).

Don't feel bad, MIBWorthy. I ran BOINC and other DC projects for [H] for a long time before I joined the F@H team. Even if the folding points aren't there, all those CPU cores will still be useful (and greatly appreciated) in other projects.

well i remember the last one for the gpu2 client.. was the 1888 point WU's.. lose 1500-2500 PPD depending on the card except for the gtx 285 which ran at its normal 10k PPD..

What do you guys think about XFX as a company though? I havn't had any problems yet with my 5850 BE's, but then again i've only had my gaming rig since Feb. XFX seems to have a pretty hardcore following on the hardforums, although nowhere near as hardcore as the eVGA following.

well it does now that BFG is dead.. but xfx is fine.. some of their custom PCB's on the ATI side are a little meh.. hopefully they dont end up releasing those pos cards this time around since they dont have nvidia money to save their asses..

Yeah, that is why I went and checked my 5850's to see whether they were reference or not. Thankfully mine are reference boards. We should be finding out very soon what kind of custom cards XFX will be releasing with the new 6000 series since ATI has already come and stated that we will start seeing custom video cards within the first several weeks.

Yes, I think I might do a bit of boinc from time to time - it looks like there are projects that can run in as little as an hour or two, which is perfect for me, as while I am working I can't run bigadv, or even 4.5 hrs of 6701s but I might have a couple hours here and there to give.

And perhaps PG heard my whining, and sent me two slightly used but perfectly nice 2685s. ;)

lucky you.. im on my 5th 6701 in a row.. ive already lost 5k bonus points across all of them having to stop my client while playing BFBC2.. total ive lost some where in the range of 8k points over the last 7 days..

I feel your pain - I think it took twelve straight 670x to get those two bigadv. It aint pretty at the moment.

Can't you just leave it run in the background while you are working? Obviously you wouldn't finish in the minimum time but hey, even if it takes a whole day you are still folding those units much faster than the 4 days it takes my little dual core smp......

I have my computer folding full time, and when I'm doing other things I've noticed the tpf suffer, which is expected but at least I was able to contribute 'something'

It depends what I am working on. If i am doing stills or spot checks rendering, that is exactly what I do, just leave it I in the background. But if i am rendering and animation, i might be at 100% for days at a time. So i am still working out the best way to work. I do like cutting loose on a Friday, knowing I can get nearly 72 hrs across the weekend.:p

I think I finally lucked out. Both folding1 and folding2 are working a bigadv now. Folding2 dumped a 2686 and picked up another 2686 immediately. Folding1 finished a 6702 and picked up a 2685. Maybe the drought is over? Or I just got lucky?

No, I am daring to dream it is over too, I got so excited posted a new thread

Of course, what would be really cool would be if PG posted % complete stats. I realise that changes as they make science decisions based on what they get back, but still it would be awesome to see a column on the project page that hinted at if a project was ramping up, winding down, on a hiatus, in a relationship, or "it's complicated. ;)

6701's arnt over for me, my 1090T has had 3 in a row now :( but my 9450 has pulled 3 straight non 6701/6702's.....

I drop my 2686 (116,180 credit) here in 3 hours....

I'll see what I pick up next.
