Hey All:

So I am presented with an interesting issue. I am hoping for someone's expert advice.

I have a mining computer, MSI 970A-G43, a Sempron 145, 2x 7950s, an Enermax 850 watt PSU and 4 GB of RAM running Windows 7.

This computer was once my rock of stability, but not I am pulling out my hair. When I leave the thing on for a while (hours and hours) it turns itself off and the power light blinks.

No, before you suggest it, I already have adjusted power settings so the computer should *NEVER* turn itself off.

Next, upon restart, if I can get it to restart (take 4-5 attempts) all the USB drivers have been disabled except for one. There is always a mouse or keyboard left working. I have to delete USB drivers from the task manager, let the computer reboot, and it works great for a few hours before I have to repeat the process.

Any ideas?

Wow. Sounds like you have ghosts in the machine. Are you driving your cards really hard? With incorrect settings my card would cause my rig act as if it were possessed. Sometimes my onboard NIC would refuse to work unless I completed one reboot with my USB keyboard disconnected.

You dont mention any temps? Maybe have it record temps on the cards(and anything else temp sensitive) and see what it is when the comp shuts down.

Yes, this computer is possessed by Satan. ;)

The computer took a power surge about 6 weeks ago, and I thought the PSU was toast. However, after letting the thing set overnight all was well until about a week ago.

While I know this is the "newbie" thing to do -- I am considering wiping the HDD and starting over. No personal information on there, so not really a big deal.

The GPUs go at 100% constantly. The CPU and memory sit idle.

Unplug all the power cables such as the 24 ATX cable and the 6/8 PCI-e cables, blow into them and into the connectors, then plug them back in making sure they are all in well.

I have seen so many strange computer crashes causes by losses power cables inside the rig.

If your psu got hit with a power surge you are doing yourself a disservice by continue using it. If you absolutely want to keep using it pick up a cheap psu tester from the egg or other retailers and do a quick check to make sure it's still stable. Plus they are just handy tools everyone should have, I've had mine for a few years and it has prevented a monumental amount of headaches and troubleshooting time.

Helped with my mom's pc, bestbuy tried to get her to buy a whole new pc, telling her her motherboard was fried. Me being the courteous son did a quick psu check, swapped it out with a spare and everything was good to go.

Time to shoot that PSU dead.

Yeah, a power surge is a minor detail... :)
Definately the first thing to try is another PS.

Maybe also get a good UPS?
