Interesting Drive Problem

Here is a tricky one.

My father's computer started blue screening on boot and then resetting. I eventually made it up there and found that the primary IDE drive could no longer be detected by the system. It makes a little whirring sound as if spinning up, then clicks, and whirs up again. Sounds like a busted drive right? Wrong.

So I take the system home and hook up the "busted" IDE drive to two other computers. Detects fine and passes Seagate diagnostic tests. No SMART trips occurred.

Okay, so maybe the mobo or IDE ports are bad. Hook up some extra IDE drives on my dad's computer using the same cable and power plug and they all detect and work fine.

Swap in the "bad drive" again and same problem as before. :confused: :confused: :confused: It has been a long time since I have had a hardware issue I couldn't figure out. Anyone have some wisdom to share?
 
drives are so cheap now, why dont you just get a new one and be done with it.
 
Could have been a bad connection. Did you try the "busted" drive again? Can you replicate the problem with the busted drive?

I would suggest the same thing as nitro, IDE drives are litterally free, just grab another one and you are done :)
 
Yup, I tried alternate IDE cables and placing the drive back in. Ideally instead of throwing good money away I would figure out what is wrong and fix it. IDE drives may be inexpensive, but they certainly aren't free.
 
I dunno but my time is worth more to me than $50.

If you are confident that the drive still works, why not just swap it with your spare drives and use this drive in another system?
 
I say try a different cable, i had a cable go bad and i though the drive died because it was acting up so i took the drive out and ripped it open, then bought a new drive hooked it up and found out the cable was bad so i lost all our pictures and my files all because i was stupid and open up the drive without trying a different cable.
