Interesting article documenting CPU overclocking & GPU performance gains

Would have liked to see some more controversial titles in this such as GTA4 and some recent Total War games.
 
What I would like to see is if trading between different CPU types makes a huge difference with those cards. My 6950 is not getting the FPS I would expect, so I'm planning on upgrading my old Phenom 9850BE for a newer Phenom II 980 or 1100. I'm expecting a wonderful new world of higher frame rates; but I'm now wondering if its worth it on a single-card setup...
 
When the next Asus bios update comes out that improves OCing, I was going to OC my 2500k. This article tells me to not bother going over 4ghz.
 
The Phenom 9850BE is a very slow CPU. You will really need something more powerful to make the most of Battlefield 3.

I've found myself coming over quite a few of your posts (enjoying them) lately while browsing the forums, and have seen you drop the "is pants" line several times. At this point, it gives me a chuckle every time, and when I come across it, I don't even have to check who the poster is. Not sure if you're actively trying to bring the term into our common lexicon, or just happened upon the phrase yourself, but two thumbs up =)
 
Haha, that's british slang for you. There are plenty more linguistic quirks you'll probably pick up if you look hard enough :)

Somewhere around 3.5-3.7 GHz my chip maxes out my card as well.

3.8GHz and SLI/CFX is prob the way to go, to bad there's no Metro 2033.

I don't really care for the article tho, because at the end of it on summary and conclusion. The author goes into how SLI or CFX is faster than the other. Well it's only faster depending on the game benched.
 
not a bad article on the whole. Room for improvement but then again there always is.

Yeah sorry about that, lost in the plethora of Battlefield 3-related threads going around at the moment, and its CPU requirements are a hot topic.
If you're planning on upgrading your CPU, have you checked what your board can support? It's pretty rare that boards from the era of the 9850BE can actually take the modern Phenom II chips.
 
I think the problem there though is that the faster CPU performance is being somewhat offset with the reduced PCI express bandwidth of P67 vs. X58. Not sure if the nforce 200 is actually as fast as a genuine 32x chipset or not.
