Hello all. I'm interested in joining your cause, and I've downloaded the console version of the Folding@Home client to my computer. However, I have a few questions before I get them both up and running.

1) I'm going to be folding on the PC in my signature. It's a gaming PC, so obviously I'll be having some CPU intensive games being played on the system. FAH scales back when I'm gaming, right?

2) For my Core 2 Duo E6700, I run two instances of the client, correct?

3) What flags should I use?

4) For the [H]orde registration, what should I put for my "# of CPUs" and "Folding@Home (GHz)"? I'll be running two instances of FAH on my E6700 (I think), so would I put "2" and "5.32"?

5) I'm behind a hardware firewall (I have a Linksys WRT54GS router). Are there any special settings I should be aware of or will this use UPnP?

Anything else you can provide info on that's helpful for a folding newbie would be appreciated. I think this is an excellent idea on the behalf of Stanford, and I'm really interested in participating in the battle against these diseases.

Welcome to the [H]orde sky.strife ! It looks like you have already done some good research & are on the right track with everything. So here are my comments specific to each of your questions:

1) FAH does a good job of scaling back cpu usage, but my own experience is only with single player games. You might seek further advice for MMORPG gaming.

2) Yes, set up 2 directories (I use FAH1 and FAH2)

3) Use -local -forceasm -verbosity 9 . Install as a service. Opinions vary on big packets and advanced WU depending on the current WU available from Stanford. Consider those 2 options to be constantly up in the air. My current choice is for big packets and no advanced WU. On the other hand, that choice is not working too well for me at the current moment. I just don't necessarily know that a different combination is better. Experiment with those 2 or check the sticky at the top of the DC forum page for the "Folding Forecast"

4)Yes

5)No special settings that I know of. I use a LinkSys wired DSL router with nothing set special.

FAH scales back CPU usage, but it does not return memory allocation. Depending on the game and on your system specs this could be a problem.

With 2GB memory you should be fine. It'll take up less than 500megs, which will still leave you plenty for games.

 
I played Dark Messiah all the way thru, Far Cry, EQ1 and EQ2, CSS, and F.E.A.R. all at max settings @ 1920x1200 on the C2D in my sig with FAH running @ 100% on both cores and never could tell a difference. Beyond that I couldn't tell you. I tried it with FAH running and not running and just running on one core or the other and could not tell a difference one way or the other pretty much across the board.

I registered here but when I submitted I got a blank page (well, it still had the header, footer, and sidebar, but no content within the "Registration Info" area). Did I do something wrong or did it go through?

EDIT: While I'm at it, I've run the config for both consoles and installed them to run as a service, then rebooted. Should I see two consoles in the Task Manager? If so, one of them isn't running- any way to tell which one it is?
 
Make sure when you run the config, choose advanced options and make sure to set your machine IDs to 0 and 1 for cores 1 and 2. If you did that, somebody else will have to chime in :)


 
Turns out it didn't like the filename being changed after it was installed, I changed it back and it's working now. =)

Any idea on the [H]orde registration though?

as long as you put down #33 in the team field...you are a-ok :) and yea...before you change anything...make sure to stop F@H in the services.msc
 
King_N is the administrator. If you are having trouble you might want to PM him.
 
I think some clarification is needed for this registration thing. When you initially set up the client, it asks for your username and team. That's all you need to do from Stanford's point of view in order to show up in their stats and receive credit for the WUs you complete. The registration on hardfolding.com is for the team, and isn't mandatory (though it is nice).

Damn firewall, kept FAH from sending results all day. -_-; It's been fixed now, and I've just sent my first two WUs!
 
Well, my FAH log says that both cores have submitted their WU but the stats only show one. *emo tear*

There's usually a delay between turning in the WUs and the points showing up in your stats. Right now, though, it looks like you got your credit!
