I've been researching this myself as I want to build a high end Vista rig in the next six months, but it looks like Q1 2008 will be the time frame for Barcelona (AMD) and Nehalem (Intel) with are next gen, the Yorkfield is just a die shirk.

yorksfield is 8-core, not 4. Penryn is 4 core, coming out in april i think. Q2 of this year, so around that time, we'll see penryn's and wolfsdales.
cant we just decide. so for a q4 upgrade spending around $300 on a cpu what would u get?

Way to early, were still on track for Q3 2007 refresh for Conroe on 1.33GHZ FSB, nevermind any 45nm cores. There will be no members of the Penryn family at the earliest till H2 2007 this year. There are also no plans for 8 Core derivatives based on Penryn on desktop, as Yorkfield is an upgrade to Kentsfield with More Cache, SSE4, and a host of other moderate architectural improvements. Penryn itself is a mobile Dual Core, the upgrade to Merom, there are no plans in place for a mobile Quad Core from Intel at this time on the Penryn family, perhaps Nehalem.
Penryn will be a 45nm die shrink + enhancements to 65nm Core 2 uarch. Higher clocks, better efficiency (higher IPC), larger caches (6MB/duo - upto 12MB per CPU), SSE4, 1333 FSB, split load cache enh, fast radix 16 div / improved virtualization (VT).
"Second Half 2007" and 3Q 2007 are dates that have been mentioned, but we'll have to see. I'm hoping it works with motherboards that support quad processors and 1333fsb. It sounds like there will be new chipsets with "dual fsb" support (one per duo in a quad,) although that may be for workstation / servers only, desktops may stick with single fsb. I don't think we'll see 1600fsb on day 1, but it's probably in the cards. In any case, there will probably be new intel chipsets released with Penryn.
