I'm a newb looking to make my first build and am trying to decide what to do for CPU

looks like the AMD 3800+ is a tried and true processor, I'm just wondering what intel's "match" would be. I really don't want to spend $300 on AMD if I can pay around $200 or less getting an intel equivalent. I'm looking for something cheaper that can run Oblivion strongly. I have about a month before I buy, and am hoping intel will do more pricecuts as AM2 approaches. Besides price, the other reason I'm looking at Intel is because I'm probably going for DDR2.

How do Intel's 9xx D series match up with AMD's? I have no idea how well they match up. I know that 805 has a great performance/price ratio, but I'm new to this and am avoiding overclocking if I can.

Conroe looks great if I'm willing to wait and pay more, but the 9xx series should be even cheaper in a little bit. I might just get a conroe board and buy it later
 
The 940/950 would probably be the equivalent. I'd lean towards the 940 because it's about $256, $100 cheaper than the 950.
 
Thanks a lot!, the egg has a purchase of 9xx with a Mobo deal, i might jump on it if the deal is good, what Mobo's would you suggest with such a chip?

If I wait, i might buy a conroe board, which might cost quite a bit, how much would a conroe board probably cost?

I don't mean this is any kind of mean way or anything but unless you MUST buy right now, just DON'T. Buying anything right now is just throwing money way and is pretty Dumb to say the least. This is just the first round of Intel Price Cuts and Intel has better Processors coming in July. AMD is moving to a better Platform and will be FORCE to cut prices as well.

The after Conroe price of the 950 should be $241 MSRP. Then the E6300 will chew up and spit out the 3800+.

Sigh, I totally completely agree with everything you say, I just need to get a comp. I'm using it for things other than just gaming. Time is against me. Sometimes I'm tempted to buy pure crap, and then buy again later on.

Sure it sucks and the Conroes will be better all around for Games or Whatever. As for Motherboards, if it doesn't say Conroe support right on the front of the Box, I'm not buying it=P
