Intellipark: Disable, or delay?

Wondering what the general consensus here on WD's Intellipark feature is.

A lot of people say disable it, some set it to 300 seconds..

What's the best practice for giving your drives the best chance at a long life? I'm putting a bunch of these in a ZFS build and I'd like some clarity on the subject before I make a decision.

Well, I've got 12 3TB AV-GPs ready to go in a pool, so it's too late to go back. :p

Despite your advice, I know that it's very common to use WD drives with Intellipark in ZFS arrays, however ill-advised it is, and so I'd like to hear from these people their experiences.

I ran ten WD20EARS drives in ZFS for a few months (I got them cheap). I ran them stock, no wdidle tricks or otherwise. It worked, but I did have one drive die after about two months. I don't know if that was just bad luck or related to "GreenPower" issues. I eventually swapped all my drives for Hitachi 2TB drives. So there ends my personal experience.

If you can turn it off, I'd run them. Just not sure you can with the newer models.
 
Definitely use wdidle3. I wouldn't disable the idle timer though, 300 seconds is more than enough to prevent high LCC count.

I use it on all my WD greens (EADS, EARS, EARX) with no problems, LCC is under 10k in over 2 years of utilization.
 
go with the most logical.
1.) the head parking is there for a reason
2.) you dont want excessive head parking
.... set the idle timer to whatever pleases you, where 300secs=5minutes and sounds just perfect.

I would say set it for the maximum, or disable it completely and let the OS/drivers handle it based on your settings. If you search here sometime back there was a thread where we found drives that were set for 3 seconds and had several million head parks.
 
I would never set them to 3 seconds... 300 seconds would definitely be the only option... or disabling, but I've heard too many horror stories about disabling Intellipark.
 
Last call on opinions before I do some fwiddling (see what I did there) with my build and lock it down.
