Hey guys.. so I was talking with my friend today (mulebennet) and he asked me the following question:

Why does an AMD processor clocked at oh say 2.0Ghz compare evenly with something like a 2.8Ghz Intel processor?

I being the retarded fvck that I am have no idea. So I turn to the [H] for the answer. Kthx.
 
when i first saw the thread title i was like "not another one!"

but i'm glad it's a decent question :)

the answer (as i understand it) is that the architecture of AMDs' cores is MUCH more efficient than that of Intels'. That's why AMD's don't take as much power, but it makes them harder to push up (in terms of Clock Speed as well). Which is why they need those monikers, like "2500+" so that numbskulls don't just look at an Intel CPU and go "2.4 gigahurtz. must be bett4r!!"

With Centrino's and regular P4's there is an equation to find the comparable P4 to whatever Centrino ur looking at. The equation is something like Centrino Proc Speed X 1.8Ghz=P4 Equivalent --- Is there a formula for AMD to Intel? Thanks for the input.

and no, to answer your question, there isn't a formula for AMD <> Intel or vice versa. Why? Not every AMD has the same architecture, and not every AMD proc. is created equal. Same for Intel. What if you wanted to convert an Opteron to a Pentium? Or an Itanium to a Duron?

Each "line" of CPUs is a different architecture, Durons, Celerons, Pentiums, Athlons, Itaniums, '64's...so no. There is no formula (that I know of.).

I didn't think that it was quite like that. I believe the reason is basically that the AMD cores just execute more instructions per clock cycle. So, if for examples sake (not saying this ratio is true) a 2GHz AMD chip were as fast as a 3 GHz Intel chip in every way shape and form, then that would mean that if Intel's processor executed 10 instructions per clock cycle, the AMD chip would be executing 15 instructions per clock cycle. Its a bit more complicated than this, as AMD chips have different FPU architecture and pipeline architecture etc, but thats the basic idea. Hmm... actually, I suppose you could call that more efficient. :O

So yeah, thats the basic idea. Its the same thing with the PowerPC processor, Ultra Sparc, etc. If all other things are equal, and different clocked chips perform at the same "speed", then their instructions per clock (IPC) must be different to account for that difference.

Hope that wasn't too confusing...
 
Intel's have a high clock speed and a long pipe lines.
AMD's have a slow clock speed and a short pipe lines.

Think of it as a trolly dash in a supermarket store.
The AMD approch is to get 6 high priced items from the whole store in each basket
The Intel approch is to just get 14 items from one isle in each basket.
So an AMD takes longer to find each item but you finish the list faster.
And a Intel finds each item quicker but finishes the list slower.

Which approch works better depends on two things.
How organized the list is. ie, how much doubleing back is needed.
And how badly you are penalized for mistakes. ie, grab the wrong item and have to dump the whole basket.
A more oragized list favours the Intel approch.
More mistakes favours an AMD approch.
