Did anyone ever notice that when you go to the main page (http://www.hardforum.com/index.php?), you can see how many viewers there are in each subforum?
I just noticed today... and it seems like the AMD forum has about 25-30 viewers, while the Intel forum is more around 0-5 ;)

But Intel still outsells them 9:1 or so.
But this is a forum, not a webshop or anything, so sales figures shouldn't have too much to do with it... except that there should be many more Intel users.

That's ok, nice to see AMD on top for a change. Once Intel get shteir act together, it'll go back to normal.

... probably not. This is normal. Look for polls done at enthuisiast sites. It's always AMD. Of course the real winner is Intel anyways. Like you said this doesnt change who sells the most cpus. You are looking at a regular situation.

Not when I first got into gaming and computer, before the Athlon XP, it was always Intel, famed by everyone. The XP being a great chip for the price gave a lot of people (including myself) a really great system.

This is an enthusiast site. A lot of people here are... how to word this... out of the mainstream.

In the main public, most people get Dells and such. Here, people for the most part buy and build their own system. It's a lot cheaper to make a good AMD system than a good Intel system, and a large part of the forum population plays games (which the AMD chips excel at above pretty much everything else.)

In reality, Intel has far more users than AMD.

edit: and yes, I noticed it a lot. I'm sure you could imagine the jokes Eclipse and I made to eachother regarding this. ;)

Sales or marketshar or even which products are better has little to nothing to do with it. The fact is this is an hardware enthusiest web site. Since AMD's superior price and performance ratio makes AMD based systems the platform of choice for the hardware and gaming enthusiest.

Therefore the demographics of AMD vs. Intel amongst the users on this forum makes the AMD side of things more popular. So AMD isn't as popular and doesn't sell as many processors as Intel by any stretch of the imagination. However HERE on THIS forum, you'll find that AMD is more popular.

Obviously

And in the rest of the world - most people don't care what's in their box. They just want to email/get porn/send pics/whatever regular people do. :p

And of course, Intel advertises a lot more. I've only recently seen AMD commercials on TV, while Intel has had them on tons of channels for the past few years. Then of course, there are the people who think megahertz are the end-all be-all of performance. I always feel the urge to hurt someone when I hear stuff like "But this box is 3 Ghz compared to this 2.2 Ghz (Athlon 64). I need 3 Ghz for emails/crap I do."

Hell, some people even have this weird thing about expensive = good. My friend's dad bought a notebook (from dell) for over $2200. He would not even look at the notebooks I suggested because they were from companies he never heard of, like Acer and Asus, even though the specs on those were even better than his and cost $1000 - $1500 less. And of course, Intel systems in the market I've seen are more expensive, and people buy them more.

Right now, I think the biggest thing that would be great for AMD is for Dell to sell them.

You are not educated very well, are you? The online computer enthusiast forums are filled with gamers and well, enthusiasts. AMD has products that excel in GAMING, appealing to GAMERS. In turn, these chips product higher BENCHMARKS, appealing to ENTHUSIASTS WHO BENCHMARK. Therefore since intel has the lower performing gaming chip, it wouldn't be as popular, now would it?

Now thats not saying that AMD is better, as equally matched Pentium D's and Pentium 4's will surpass their AMD counterparts in other various tests.

I don't know what that other guy is talking about but there have always been more AMD leaning folks on this and other forums than those on the Intel side. Most of all, it's "go along with the croud", or "Go AMD if you want more friends" even as they call folks who use Intel processors Newbies, Sheep and not computer smart or etc........ Most folks, 9:1, DON'T care about the same things Geeks do. That's why the Celerons are the number one selling Personal Computer Processor in history.

All you have to do is look at past polls? When Northwoods were kicking the crap out of the AthlonXPs, the ratio here was 7:3 in favor of AMD. There were more AMDF@Ns here even when the POS K6-2/3 was AMD's best. Even as weak platforms kept most sane folks away from AMD, the ratio was even higher 8 to 1 for AMD (the other 1 didn't care). I've never seen a poll here, or at any of the larger sites that picked Intel over AMD, unless it was negative.

I talked to tons of folks who are DIYers and prefer Intel who don't even bother posting on messages boards. I asked them why and their answers were very close to the same every time. It goes like, "Why bother, there's nothing but a bunch of AMD f@ns flaming folks who say the slightest thing nice/good/positive about Intel".

All anyone has to do is look at the Half Life 2 database and see that most AMD folks live in an alternate reality. AMD cheaper

I see your point that AMD is not really a household name yet. I also see your point that Intel CPUs have their strong points, but frankly, there are fewer and fewer apps that are better suited to Intel systems.

In essence, this is the basis for AMD's lawsuit vs. Intel. AMD's products can more than stand on their own - why is it that (generally) only entheusiast sites welcome their products? I do agree with several articles I've read, and with those people who argue that AMD needs to advertise smarter and more often, but really now, AMD products don't get nearly the exposure they deserve.

AMD also needs somthing better to compete with hyperthreading, and speed throttling due to heat, IMO.

All AMD CPUs throttle now... that's been working since the first K8 cores. ;)

HT has been taken care of by the X2's... for the most part. Some reviewers still seem to find HT more responsive, however.

Intel still has the better chipsets, but chipsets for AMD got good enough even for me.

Is it really the price/performance ratio, or the gaming performance?
Or could it be that supporting the underdog is cool?

Speaking for myself... I did buy an Athlon because of the price/performance.
However I still value Intel systems greatly.

The decisions of intels CEO's does not truely reflect the integrity and honesty of each product and each worker of the company. The AMD vs. intel lawsuit doesnt make me ditch my intel system and go out to buy another AMD rig.

Its kind of a 'cool' or 'e-penis' issue aswell. Same thing over at vwvortex.com (VW Enthusiast site). You're VW isn't cool unless you have non-chrome rims, shaved bumpers, and have a certain german body kit. Anything else is considered 'gay', 'ugly', or 'stupid'. In this case, everyone is buying AMD's and jumping along with others. 10$ says if AMD had a better performaing chip, but everyone had intels reguardless, people would still buy intels even though the AMD's performed better.

Everytime someone asks a processor question on [H], the AMD funboys jump right on it. On the VW forums, when a quesiton about rims or a kit comes up, the usual suspects jump on it and suggest exactly what they think is 'cool', and the cycle repeats.

Its because no one cares / wants to talk about / or read about Netburst Anymore.

But you best beleive when Yonah comes out and the successor to Netburst, I will be all over that Intel Forum.

Dillusion: That's just human nature, I suppose. I play guitar, so I hang out at guitar forums online, and the same thing happens there. Certain gear is considered cool, and certain gear is considered crap or gay or whatever. I use a guitar multi-effect unit of the brand 'Zoom', for example. Which was the first to introduce very compact and cheap units for beginners. I however have the top model of the series, which is semi-professional, and certainly can compete head-on with other brands in its price category. But still people look at it as if it's crap... It's just not a 'cool' brand.

The same with Intel, a lot of people seem to be blind to Intel's good products and features, just because some of Intel's products are below their standards. Intel is just not 'cool'.
The difference is that in the computer world, there are a lot of professionals of higher education, capable of reasoning in a logical and rather objective way, and they will buy Intel gear.
With guitars, well, nearly everyone is just some kind of !!!!!! ;) Mostly people of lower education, who are more susceptible to trends and fashions, and less likely to think for themselves.

Oh im sure intel will be looking into ways to beat amd in game performance in next gen chips becuase they allready own amd in multitasking. Funny how most your amd users never point this out its only FPS and thats 5% at best most the times. Anyways yes the amd x2 has narrowed the gap and amd has made a dam good chip but I truely think intel is about to bite back soon for the gamers :) Anyways single core its intel anyway over amd and duel core I would go with x2 amd.

I went with the 2.8C when it was hot (... really hot), and the AMD platform was switching sockets, then as time went by and both my intel based chipsets keeled over on me, I went AMD again.

Running an X2 and loving SMP for the first time, multi-task like mad... Game + Dev Apps + Web etc...

I tend to go with what I feel is better, right now and for a while Intel has blown, they have lost the majority support in the community. Theres very little reason I would tell anyone I know to buy a P4... now future non-netburst based dual cores... may do awesome, at that point my opinions and likes may change.

Saw the same thing during the P3s death, and rise of XP, for a while XP really did own the market regardless.

Just passing the ball backnforth in the court.

To me, my POV holds both companies as equal choices for consideration, I know in reality, AMD is stomped as a company(go go anti-trust), hope this changes as time goes... more direct, even, competition there is the better it is for the consumers.

Who the hell cares. You don't stop listening to a wicked CD or riff if you find out someone didn't use the 'cool' pedal in the recording. Everyone should STFU about which processors/pedals make their penis seem larger to them.

You put it pretty well. Intel is "old news" for the time being. AMD will be next year and the year after probably, since they have no plans to change the execution core of the Athlon.

Exactly.

Notice, I've never bother into the amd forum nor I ever will. Everyone of my co-workers own a Pentium based system and I'd say all of my family members. I'm 100% sure they don't come to sites like this one. I guess I'm the only one. :D . I've been building Intel systems since 2000 but not untill this year (2005) I've started to attend forums and all in the Intel side by the way, so as for what's quoted above, that's the one and only truth. Yes, I'll never ever in my life will I consider buying or recommending amd, not will I post a single thread or post in the amd forum. I got class! I don't bother with what I don't like.

But I'm pretty sure amd f@ns will ALWAYS come to the Intel side just to flame. I just wish they'd stay where they belong and

You must be refering to the ONE commercial for the entire show, compared to the 20 by IBM and IBM+Intel servers. That's the reason why Intel products tend to be a little bit more than amd. Good thing though, ONE commercial is not going to increase the price of the whole product line, hopefully. But regarless of that lame commercial, I will always buy and recommend nothing but Intel. Eat, Sleep and Dream Intel. ;)

Well, yes actually. I saw him use a Telecaster on a very early video of Dazed And Confused. Same with Gary Moore, he used various Strat-like guitars in the early days, including brands like Jackson and Ibanez. Both have now seen the light and use vintage Les Pauls pretty much exclusively ;)

QFT - indeed those people who have a one-way-mentality always lead to ...

i'm not only referring to this particular case, i'm considering also those ppl which have an only-AMD-mentality

its just technology guys, it changes everday one day #1 is over #2 , the other day its the contrary

and yes though, in this case we can't consider them as #1 and #2 becasue taking intel as #1, amd can't make #2 as long as we base competition on popularity etc ... we know that in this genration AMD has lots of potential improvement over intel products but for the time being its only us ppl who are interested in this kind of industry and technology who can make the difference, we have to wait till amd improves it popularty

and btw i guess that intel also started with one commercial and didn't start right away with 20 bla bla bla

they're growing up give them chance, chip-wise currently they're equal/better than intel, consumer wise they lack

but *my opinion* it is a most ignorant action to conclude that #1 rules and that #2 sucks or vice versa its just a matter of progress.

The problem is... Intel is the mainstream because 99% of the people don't know/care about AMD, and their dell had a P4 or Celery.
Now, the people that consider themselves enthusiasts don't want to buy a mainstream product, because it would make them seem not-so-alternative when it comes to hardware.

I bought my 2500+ back then cause the only thing intel had for the same price was a celery. If I had to buy a CPU right now, it would probably be a 820. People just have to realize that being anti-mainstream doesn't make you any cooler, and get whatever is best for their money instead.

Yes, it's technology... I'm interested in technology. I don't specifically care about the players, but about the technology they put forth. Ofcourse one cannot deny the vast amount of technology that Intel has put forth over the years.
Anyway, it's the same with sports and such. Even if I don't support a particular athlete or team, I can still enjoy a race or a match or whatever, just because of whatever talents and excitement they put forward.

That's not what I remember. When I bought my 2.6C for $211 shipped, the 2600+ was $210 from Newegg.com. My bud paid $467 for his 3200+ a month earlier. These prices were from June 2003. $1 cheaper. My Abit IC7-G i875 was $162 while my Bud's Abit nForce 1 if I remember was $149, WOW, a whole $14 saved, we had the same RAM. Then mine kicked the shit out of his in almost everything we tested. 13 out 14 of my Bud's and folks I know, 2.6C's did 3.26GHz or better with overclocks, was faster at stock speed as well. AthlonXP's didn't overclock worth a Fart until folks both the more expensive Mobile models. They still got bitch slapped then.

For folks who are still talking about AMD is cheaper means some folks can't count=P Price looks good performance wise when you're talking about gaming. They look WAYYYYY overpriced when you compare most other software.

Even though Intel outsells AMD let me bring up a few valid points.

1.Most Intel's sales are OEMs
2.AMDs sales are actually retail chips that people bought because they are good and not just in the desktop
3.Intel is liek walmart...nobody likes them but you just can't get away

Umm actually they are cheaper. Look at an A64 vs. a P4 E64...wow that's like a freakin $200 difference. And AMD kicks P4s ass all around in almost any test. Gaming has been taken over by AMD just like the whole world will. The AMD chips hands Intel's ass to them in almost every aspect.

Since I'm an old Army Guy and love taking money from Jar-rines, I'd bet you it wouldn't make a difference. Yonah could come out and kick the living shit out of anything AMD has the same ratio of visitors to either side so the number of folks would look the same on either side of the forum.

Intel does sell retail chips, but as was said before- Most intel users are mature and dont sign up on a forum just to go 'OMFG LOOK AT ME I JUST BOUGHT A MUTHA EFFING 640!!!!111111111 WITH TWO EM BEE CACHE!'.

Now we can get into demographics of processor users, and yes AMD users are gamers. Yes AMD owns the gaming segment of the processor 'world' but AMD sure as hell does not 'stomp' 'romp' or 'own' any intel chip.

Yeah, any mission critical system is running an Intel of some way shape or form.

Primarily from a buisness aspect.

Also, you're right, intel does have the lower performing gaming chip. Pretty good reason for me to say that that means AMD has the better product currently than intel, and therefore is more popular on an enthusiast forum.

WOW, that's freakin BS! LOL! Let's see, explain "hands Intel's ass to them"? Does that mean that eventhough Games perform better on AMD based rigs, Games don't run on Intel based rigs?

Since you said A64, surely you're not talking about Multi-tasking while Gaming, right? P4's with AMD's X86-64 ship or will ship with the 6xx and 5x1 models.
Even if you use AMD's Price Rating system, there are not processors within the 120 to $300 range that show that much of a Price Difference. Not many folks give a flip about P4EE or FX-55 or higher, so who in hell cares? Picking out the EE of AMD or Intel processor are kind a Dumb! But oh, that's right, it's cool for AMD to stick it to the consumers but sucks when Intel does it, right? Faster, at what costs?

Donnie27

it was more balanced when Intel released the "b" and "c" line of P4's. I used to be strictly Intel ever since i got a 2.4b 3 years ago and then through the whole 2.4c OC craze. Only last year did i buy a AXP mobile because i was bored and then my first A64 after that when s939 came out. There were a lot of people that had 2.4c's that i don't even see post anymore. Ever since Intel went to s775 the participation in this forum dropped quite a bit from what i've seen.

When i first switched to AMD i felt it kind of awkward posting in that forum since i hung out in the intel one for a couple of years.

Many of us do more than game. I only benchmark to see if the system I just set up is setup correctly. Better? That's way to broad. I do Photo, Video and Audio. Most of the stuff I run runs faster on P4's and no, I don't have $589 for an X2 LOL! Being an Intel user, I have to buy a new motherboard and wanting to get better gaming performance, I have to spend another $269 for an ATI 800XL since I don't have enough for the two 6600GTs I'd like. Cheaper????? No it's not better when a simple 3GHz $210 630 runs Premiere Pro 7 faster than an A64 FX-55. Or when 820 costs less than a 3500+, better? Depends what you run and I plan to run both. Best all around or overall only depends on what you do, all around or overall.
