Am I going to see a huge difference in these two chips based on the AMD 6MB L3 shared vs. the Intel 12MB shared L3 on the six core chips?

The Intel chip is going to thrash the AMD chip, if that's what your wondering. The L3 has almost nothing to do with it, though.

The 6 core AMD chips can only compete with 4 core / 8 threaded Intel chips i7 940 and below. There are 2 reasons for this.

1. Intel i series processors (i3, i5,i7) have a significant IPC advantage over AM3 chips so in a single thread a 2.66 GHz i7 920 outperforms a 3.3GHz AM3 chip.

2. Intel has hyperthreading. So its 4 core i7 chips have 8 threads with 4 virtual and 4 real cores. The virtual cores add up to 35% percent of a core each.

if all else were equal, a chip with 12mb of L3 is going to be 'better' then a chip with 6mb. even still, and unfortunately for AMD, all else is not equal. any 6-core intel chip will dominate any 6-core AMD.

but keep in mind, the 6 core intel chips are still fairly expensive, where as you can pick up a 6 core AMD chip for $200

I believe AMD 6 core chips are priced competitively to match their target competition 4 core intel i7 and i5 chips.
