No, no this is not a flame thread.
According to what i've heard and accordingly, what i've posted, the P4 doesn't do well in compiling.
Now i'm not so sure about that, so i'm going to ask all the [H] folks with P4s.
Will someone step up to the plate and compile something with their P4 2.4C (stock), to which i'll compare my own compile times with dual AthlonMP 2000s. According to almost every benchmark out there, the P4 will slam my poor 2000s, but i want to see if that's true with the basic GCC compiler and a large-ish program (say, Firefox).
I want suggestions on how we can do this and someone with a P4 2.4C and 512MB of RAM. (I only have 512MB)
My machine specs are:
- Dual AthlonMP 2000
- 512MB Crucial Reg/ECC PC2100 or 512MB Samsung PC3200 (which one should i choose?)
- MSI K7D-L
- 120GB Maxtor 8MB HDD
- WinXP Pro (heh)
So who will do it?
I also need suggestions on:
- Which program to use for compiling (i'm thinking cygwin+GCC 3.3)
- What to compile
- How to measure the time
- How to eliminate other variables in the test.
