Beyond3D has posted more information about Intel’s new Visual Computing Group Chief Architect. I don’t want to steal the thunder from the folks at B3D so head on over and find out who will be heading up Intel’s GPU project.

The graphics world has been atwitter in recent months over swirling rumors and indications of a re-entry by Intel into high-end graphics. Speculation has centered around the so-called "Larrabee group", which recently was identified on Intel's own pages as their "Visual Computing Group". Now, courtesy of a couple of seminar pages at major universities, VCG's "Chief Architect" has come to light.

So how long before Nvidia and ATI are put out of business by the Intel 12075 Ultra with 256mb embedded Edram on 22nm ? :D Will that hit first? or the lawsuits for Antitrust and the like from the Attorney Generals office in 2011?

And you start out by mentioning how this is thier second foray into high end pc graphics !? Uhmmmmn.... what was the first ??? :D

I honestly thought this would happen. ATI is part of AMD now and Nvidia is playing games with Intel(not enabling SLI on Intel desktop chipsets). So what is one to do if it has enough resources, money and knowledge??? Make it yourself and not be @ someones mercy.

I see Nvidia getting screwed in the future if this pans out well for Intel.

Intel making their own CPU's and GPU's with AMD making their CPU's and ATI making GPU's and chipsets.

I bet Nvidia is thinking of enabling SLI on Intel chipsets right about now.

Crap cant edit.

Can you guys imagine the driver support from Intel for graphics and games...not to mention stability.

This could get interesting.

so Intel put the lead architect of the Pentium 4 to design the newer Intel GPUs? what can we expect out of him? HyperCrapping and 4Ghz GPU! and 400W heater! and of course worse performance than GMA900.

oh, I wouldn't be suprised if one day, Intel did release a card called Intel superDuper Graphixxx 4000000+ or whatever, and you pop off the 200Lb heatsink, and finds a quad stacked Pentium 4 underneath 200 oz of 100% pure silicon paste.

This will be good for the consumer. More (actual) competition in the discreet graphics space. (I don't count VIA or any of the other makers who have low performance chips.)

I will often build systems that are based upon mobile products/chipsets etc.

Most of the time, I end up with what would be considered an underpowered integrated graphics solution from Intel. This graphics solution is usually adequate. I can't say enough good things about driver support from Intel.

I recently purchased a few Shuttle X100 machines only to discover that Shuttle is not providing Windows 2000 video drivers for their proprietary ATI based x1400 video solution. ATI refuses to release drivers for mobile products because they allow the OEMs to change the hardware enough that standardized drivers may not be stable.

Right about now, more competition in the video card business sounds like a pretty good idea ;)

P.S. NVidia and ATI have basically abandoned the high quality 2D market. Reviewers rarely touch on 2D quality issues that are often apparent when a large high quality CRT is pushed to high resolutions with newer cards from ATI/NVidia. I have never seen these problems on a Matrox card.

Excuse me. NetBurst was an interesting idea with a lot of potential, but had too many obstacles to overcome. They had no reason to anticipate such high leakage current, and programs just weren't coded in such a way that a highly parallel, long-pipelined architecture could really hold its own. As we've seen by the GPGPU (and Folding@Home :)), we're encroaching on a paradigm shift. Intel has said that the next generation of CPU's will likely bring HT back, and they are also pushing for more and more cores per package (80 by 2010, anyone?). Why not put that kind of design back in graphics, where they can REALLY do some damage? How is having 16 pipelines, 96 or 120 "stream processors," 48 ALU's, etc in a GPU any different from Intel's super-simplified multi-core CPU?
