Intel to launch quad-core chips Nov. 13

In a race with rival Advanced Micro Devices, Intel will bring its quad-core chips to market in a new line of Hewlett-Packard workstations due to be introduced on Nov. 13.

HP sent out invitations to the event but did not specify exact models and prices. The computers will probably use Intel's planned Xeon 5300 chip, and are designed to run high-end applications like seismic analysis and visualization software from Autodesk, Parametric Technology, Landmark Graphics, and Ansys.

The launch would mean that Intel brings quad-core processors to market before AMD, a crucial win in a year when Intel has made as many headlines for its layoffs and missed earnings targets as for its technology.

AMD plans to release its own quad-core chips in the middle of 2007, and claims its monolithic design is superior to Intel's plan, which essentially glues two dual-cores chips together. But without having any hardware to test, analysts are divided on whether this detail will significantly affect the chips' performance.

Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini defended the company's design at last month's Intel Developer Forum, saying that customers would care more about the pure speed and performance of their computers than about how the chips inside it are packaged.

Compared to the ratcheting of clock speeds in conventional chips above 3GHz and 4GHz, multiple-core chips can accelerate processing tasks in desktops and servers without drawing more electricity and generating extra heat. They can also handle more than one instruction set at a time, allowing computers to multitask more efficiently.

The game enthusiast market will be a testing ground for the first quad-core chips, as Intel has already arranged to ship its "Core 2 Extreme" version of the chip to 13 gaming PC vendors, including Dell, Gateway, and VoodooPC, Otellini said at the show. The company plans to ship the "Core 2 Quad" version for mainstream desktops in the first quarter of 2007.

In contrast, the launch with HP next month will focus on high-end users in the fields of digital content creation, computer-aided engineering and design and oil and gas exploration.

One of the earliest users of quad-core chips is the Gates Planetarium at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. On Thursday, HP invited reporters to witness the technology at a Nov. 13 press conference called "Quad Fest."

why do we need quad core, dual core isn't even utilized in 98% of applications. quad core seems like a waste at this point in time.

you do realize you are in the DC "distributed computing" forum? where [H]ard Folders always get 110% out of all of their CPU cores?

Have you started folding?

yeah, i know about DC, but i am not going to buy quad core just to fold a few extra WUs. I folded for a while then just gave up because it was boring to me. I will wait for these to come out and hope that they drop the prices on current dual core CPU's.

Wonder how much HP paid to get the exclusive on these releases ?

Zero, Zilch, Nada. Intel probably did it for free to get back at Dell for starting to do business with AMD. Then again, Intel doesn't do anything for free. Okay, it probably cost them $10. ;)

You do make a good point that quad-cores have a definite potential to knock down the prices on dual-core CPUs. I certainly like that idea. Keep in mind, though, that the first round of quad-core (or for the AMD fans "two dual-core processors in one package") will be targetted at the server space, where there certainly *is* a market. Eventually they'll show up on the desktop scene, but not quite as quickly as dual-core processors did.

You guys sure this is an HP exclusive? I just see an HP announcement, nothing saying that it's exclusive to them...

Mmm tasty.

Well, if it's Quad by the end of the year on the desktop, then it's definitely fun time for me!

:D

If i had any money
I would be saving my money for a quad fest game machine with a new
ati r600 GPU

Just to let you know, this isn't exclusive to HP...the 690 is getting some new friends shortly...

I will wait for the AMD. Since they bought ATI I expect a chip design in the near future that integrates the r600 and the hammer. I am thinking that 128 seperate FPU units and a few internal HT busses running at core speed will make for an interesting server and desktop chip.

This is GREAT for we Folders. The equivalent of 4 systems, without the expense of buying 3 additional motherboards, 3 hard drives, 3 video cards, 3 power supplies. Yes initially the quad cores will be too pricey for most of us but that'll change.

I can see 2000ppd for a quad-core system. Drool. Couple that with a GPU client. yeah baby.

How is Folding boring? Unless you sit there watching the graphical client all day? Just set up the console version and forget about it. Trust me, taking my father in law to Chemo 2 x a week, with sessions of radiation in between IS BORING, not to mention it sucks. If we can help people not get these awful diseases it'll be a real blessing. YOU may even benefit at some point (which is where the selfish self-interest comes in).

Id rather not get into it, and just let the PPU forum-ers fight this one out, but that is true. Is anyone here old enough to remember when windows 95 came out, I mean really remember it (I know theres some of you out there). More importantly, do any of you remember what the big change was? 16 to 32 bit. Hardly any software supported it, but software cant take advantage of crap, unless the hardware is there.

We saw this with 64-bit, and dual core. Its nothing new, eventually software will take advantage of this. But for me, this means I can have 2 or 3 copies of folding@home running, while encoding videos, and browsing hardforum or playing a videogame. Im willing to bet, that the quad-core is going to be targeted toward those who buy tape drives, SCSI drives, dual monitors, etc. Those two work with AutoCad, Video production, or a hell of a lot of photoshop.

Normally, I say "don't take offense to this", but I think I'm not going to this time:

Take full offense to this. Shut up and leave the DC forum.

Thank you for saying this. I didn't want to get mad, but trolls are trolls.

When has helping medical research been boring?
I find it quite fasinating that scientists are using the information that our computers use on folding to better help people.

I don't know about you, but that in itself is not boring.

I welcome more technology that can help us get to a cure faster.
So to say that is boring is a direct slap in our faces to what have done by folding by a couple of years.

I'm personally going to buy a 4x4 AMD system and use all the cores plus my 1950XT GPU to Fold. I'll upgrade to quad core x 2 when there available. I can't donate millions for equipment or research, but I can sure as hell lend my CPU time to a good cause! :D

I agree that is a great post! Excellent way to look at it.

They're a ways off right now. Intel pushed up the quadcore release of the server chips to take back marketshare, they already have the market share on the laptop side...

It will be hard to choose between the two options. Since AMD's QC isn't going to be out for a while (sometime in 07) you'd be sitting on a 'relatively slow' platform for a while, given that the C2 is beating the K8 pretty handily clock for clock. Luckily I am in the situation that I may have to wait until Jan07 before I am upgrading (moving back to the Fatherland), so that I can wait out and see how "cheap" the mainstream QC chips will be.
