Hi. I think my AM2 setup is going to shit. I have a post about it in the "General Hardware" forum called something like "Computer won't freezes in BIOS" so if you guys could check it out and see if you know anything it would be nice.

I've come to grips that something might be wrong with my system. Most likely my Mobo or CPU. If that's the case I would obviously need a new Mobo or a new CPU so I think instead of spending $175ish for the best AMD dual core (6400+ Black Edition) I might be better off getting a mobo/cpu setup from intel for that price.

I will be using this setup for gaming. Ocing is an option because my case runs very cool. I'll most likely need to get another CPU fan to because I think my 9500 is AM2 Only.

I will be using this for gaming. I have an 8800GT and I'd like a nice CPU to compliment it but I don't need to spend an arm and a leg because college is VERY expensive.

It has to be able to beat an AMD x2 @ 2.9ghz or it's not really worth upgrading.

If it's my CPU then I could always just get a 5000 BE for $100 and OC it to 3.2ghz, is that worth it?

I was thinking maybe an E2160 + P35 for $160ish?
 
The E2160+P35 combo should work out very well, and easily get you over 3.0GHz on the stock cooler. That will outperform an X2@2.9GHz.
 
What's an intel counterpart of a 2.9ghz x2?

2.6ghz Intel(Dual)?

I was looked at

OCZ 2 x 1 gig 4-4-4-12 ($30ish after rebates)
E2160 ($70ish)
Gigabyte P35 ($90ish)

On newegg.

That comes out to about $190. Sound good or could I do better? How far could I push the E2160 on Air? My temps are VERY low. To put it in perspective my 4000 x2 (at stock) is only 31c after 100% load for a few hours and my 8800GT (stock cooler)gets to 52c Max.
 
Ahh my bad. As I said before i'm more of an AMD person. Thanks for clearing that up.

But with that setup, will I be able to reach 3.0ghz +?

How high can I push it?
 
E2160 reaches 3 GHz no problem.
3.2 GHz would be a push on stock cooler.
 
how does one of these Pentium Duo Exxxx procs compare to amd's x2? my 5000+ runs about 3.1-3.2 @ 235-245fsb on stock volts... has anyone here posted any scores or screenshots from ProcessorMark, SiSoft Sandra and such for comparison? I saw some E2180's sell on eBay for $60 and less, andif they do real well, my old 975x-based Abit is a swell overclocker, runs my Pentium D 940 65nm/65w at 300fsb real easy - PS, my x2 5000+ beats the 940 OC'd... tia any info
