Alot of people have said that the intel stock cooling is horrible and wont get me anywhere with overclocking and it will throttle if i try..

I have a S478 3.2 Ghz Prescott P4 and i have it overclocked to 3.8 Ghz. So far after hours of prime95 testing, gaming with trottle watch on, Motherboard moniter 5, etc, my temps never hit 60 degrees C. MM5 says i idle in the high 40s and load in the mid 50s.

Is intel's fan really that bad? im looking forward to gettin a exos water system but is it really worth it?

btw i did remove the stock thermal paste and put on AS5. Would that have made such a huge difference?
 
The newer Prescott heatsinks aren't all that bad. Lot of surface area and the fan moves a decent amount of air.
 
Well i am using a stock intel cooler with my Intel P4 640 3.2GHz, i gotta say i am impress, i get idle of 45 degrees and when gaming hard it reaches 50 and little above 60, and i am surprise how quiet it is, and all the new P$ now come with a 9 blade fan so its alot quieter.

No way! What I meant is for stock operation, they're great thermal solutions. Why would you even ask about a very moderate overclock on the stock thermal solution? It's a no-brainer really.
 
2.4GHz Celeron-D E0 stepping at 3.6GHz stock voltage and cooling runs 42-43 degrees under load. Can't complain.
 
Hey just keep an eye on your temps. If it gets too hot back it down and buy a better HSF or go h2o.

I 'd push it until you hit 60C for load but it will probably crap out by then.

Overclockers.com has a prescott duct cooling mod that you can recreate for your own case if you want to lower the temps even further.

I say just keep going until it becomes unstable or you're uncomfortable with the temps. If you hit your temp ceiling first, go for water cooling.
 
Skt 478 Prescott'S run that hot or higher depending on your case airflow. The newer chips and 775 are cooler because of revisions and such. I would search and see what the temps were like for prescott was before 775 came out. You may find that that is a very acceptable temp

I never liked it.

If you ever try to remove the srock heatsink it takes a good effort from that gunk of junk they use.
 
wow my temps are great compared to the first gen prescotts.. i think i will get water if i want to spend my money on comps
 
I have a modded intel heatsink, and my temps reach 55c at full load. My 2.8 is running at 3565MHz
