i purchased an intel g2 a while ago, and i ran into a few issues with it running in my mbp.

after an RMA, i got the replacement today

anyways, when i first opened it (bought it retail, not oem) the backside of the ssd looked like this...same as the replacement drive i got today (i'm not sure whether i received the original drive, or if they replaced it)

is this what everyone's intel SSD looks like? when i was talking to intel's CSR, they said there should be no "smudges"

if you can't see the picture, it looks like smudges or water stains (it cant be wiped off)
 
Mine is on the way so I can't help. What issues with the MBP? I just fought a Vertex all day and found that it won't work in my MBP..then I ordered a Intel G2.
 
it wouldn't boot half the time. the mbp would not recognize the drive at all.

someones after putting the machine to sleep, walking it to campus, and then taking it out, the system would hang. after a restart, i'd get the no drive icon (folder with a question mark)

this was odd since it usually happened after some sort of movement, but ssd's dont have any moving parts. i chalked it up to some sort of power issue with the g2, since my seagate hdd had no issues resuming after sleep.
 
damn why do so many ssd issues are related with macbooks, I have seen numerous posts at macroumor forum where corsair, samsung, and intel, lots of people having different issues with them.

I'm sorry but rofl that cracked me up :p

Anyway the primary reason is OSX's file system and OS really aren't built to be flexiable in that manner .. until Apple properly supports it you are basicly stuck with a 50/50 chance of something new like SSD's of working correctly.

Until Apple properly adds in a feature like TRIM in a new OS update and properly supports the requirements of SSDs you are likely gonna experience weird issues on and off. Thank Apple for the hassle.

To answer your question, my brand new x-25m 160gb G2 had similar "smudges", so that doesn't necessarily mean it's a refurb.

It does sound like it's defective though; OSX works fine with SSDs.
 
The G2 I received (Pack date in late September) had these on the bottom as well. I described it as looking like the drive was slid across the floor of a machine shop before packaging. No performance issues.
 
Just want to add that the Intel X-25M G2 is working without issues in my mid-2009 MBP. Sounds like you just got a bad one.

There were no marks of note on mine when it arrived (week of release).

It's mainly the current generation MBPs, like mine. Appears to be a problem with the SATA controller and the SSDs doing NCQ. I think we've found why Apple held back the 3Gb SATA II update.

I canceled the order last night. Too many people with the same issues on current gen MBPs w/ the X25s. Someone on the Intel forum talked to Intel and was told it was a chipset issue and NCQ. That's why it's fine in others..just not the most current.

So I'll wait.
 
I recieved two X25 G2's (80GB) last week. Performance seems fine, both had the same smudged metal look on the bottom casing.
 
Same here, the one I installed at work last week had a smudged bottom. I think it's fairly normal for whatever reason.

oddly enough when i spoke to intel CS and described the "smudges" they said that the drive should be clean, indicating that the drive was used/an open box item despite it being advertised as brand new.

in either way, the replacement drive is working, but after the hell that is intel CS, i wont be looking to intel for my next ssd.
 
I'll tell you in 6 (six) days. I cannot wait....got it from ZipZoomFly for 280 - 30 MIR. Then today the price changed to 260-$30 MIR so I emailed them to complain and ask for a refund of $20 as it hadn't even shipped out, without any real hope of success. Surprise, surprise, they gave me $20 credit towards my next purchase. Way to go ZZF
