Hi guys,

I have a question for those of you who dwell in stats and figures.

I currently have an intel D975XBX KR motherboard.
I have 2 sticks matching pair of corsair dominator 4gb DDR2 800 ram
2 ATI X1800XT 512MB video Cards
2 Seagate 500gb SATA hard drives.

My system has vista 32bit premium, and i am looking to upgrade my old CPU that is in this system.

It currently has an intel P4 D 3.4ghz -
Colling is a Thermaltake MAXX ORB
I was wondering what would be a good upgrade from this processor.

I have been looking at the
1. Q6600 $250 new.
vs
2. E4600 $140 new.

The motherboard support all intel processors with up to a 1066 bus i believe.

I would like to know what is the best choice for the money - open to suggestions.


I have never OC-d anything, so please keep that in mind.

If your going dual core, I would look at prices for E6750 or E8400.

But neither of what you have listed are bad choices.

You didn't say what you use your PC for. Gaming? Media encoding? ...?

Gaming, I would choose one of the above dual core's. Plenty of power for desktop applications and games that don't take much advantage from quad core.

Media encoding: Q6600 will crunch through nicely :)

ah... right....good point. You should be able to overclock to reach that....but even then, you may also not have a bios that can properly recognize them.
 
Thanks again but being a rookie at all this, i didnt put the exact board number, which is
D975XBX2 KR, I used that compatibility website you sent and all processors show compatible that are 1066 bus

I appreciate the help. I just dont know if the price difference from the dual core to the quad core will warrent a noticable change in speed from what i have now.

I really use my system for everything like photo editing, gaming, obviosly web surfing,

I just want to know if anyone who has one of these processors can tell me how well the system as a whole will work say running, photoshop, and browsing at the same time and maybe even running excel for invoicing.

At least i know for sure that the processsors are compatible, now its just what to spend vs performance gain.
